Alexander Kristoff: “You have to be able to suffer to make it as a professional”

Alexander Kristoff is tough, hilly and fast

alexander kristoff To call it a classic sprinter would not do the Norwegian justice. Instead of just stretching behind his opponent on flat stages and then sprinting over the rest of the field, the now 32-year-old can also achieve success in a completely different way. Among other things, he has already won a few sections that were too difficult for pure sprinters due to the numerous hills just before the finish line. His triumphs in the two monuments of Milan - Sanremo and the Tour of Flanders confirm his versatility - and above all his tenacity. In the entire field of road cycling there is probably no rider who is so tough and difficult to push to his limits. Make a high mileage and bad weather alexander kristoff only stronger.

How do you motivate yourself to train during the Corona break?

Alexander Kristoff: "I'm very fortunate to have my own gym in my house, so I use that a lot. Even during the lockdown I can train on the street here in Norway. So for me it's like winter training again."

How do you relax after a tough training session or after intense races?

"Right now there is little time to relax as my wife has just had twins and we take great care of them. When I have time, I enjoy playing video games, listening to music and skiing in the winter.”

Can you recommend a good series or movie for our readers?

"I don't really have a favorite movie, but one show I really like is Eastbound and Down."

What does your favorite food look like and what are you particularly happy about in the food bag?

"For the races, our food sponsor Enervit makes really tasty bars and gels, so I'm very happy with them."

Who do you think is the greatest professional cyclist of all time? Did you have a role model when you were young?

"The greatest of all time is definitely Eddy Merckx."

Why is cycling the hottest sport in the world?

“I love being outside and pushing myself to my physical limits. Cycling lets me do just that.”

Do you like to watch bike races yourself? Do you remember the first race you saw?

“When I was younger the Tour de France was the main race that I, like most young cyclists, watched. Now when I have time and not competing I also watch, but sometimes you need a break from that.”

What do you think was the best race of all time?

“The 2012 Olympic Games were a special race for me. To be on the podium with a medal was incredible. I will never forget this moment.”

What's your next big goal?

“To be world champion one day would be very nice. But right now we all just want to go racing again.”

What tips can you pass on to young up-and-coming drivers?

“Enjoy cycling and everything that goes with it – for example the friendships and the emotions. But you also have to really suffer to make it as a pro.”
