Cycling highlights: Nibali saves himself from the pack in Sanremo

31 May 2020 by Michael Behringer

Nibali Sanremo

Cycling highlights: Vincenco Nibali has finally made it. After several attempts, the Italian won the classic Milan – Sanremo in 2018. Even fans of other drivers cheered on the race up to the last meter, because the way the success was so impressive.

Nibali had perfect timing

Victory is not the same as victory - at least from an emotional point of view. Because there are successes that inspire us more than others just because they come about. One of them is undoubtedly the triumph of Vincenzo Nibali near Milan – Sanremo in 2018. At that time, the "Shark of Messina" attacked at Poggio and reached the top with a lead of ten seconds. It had been done by others before him, but the art of this monument lies in maintaining that lead all the way to the finish line. In recent years, many professionals have failed in this endeavor - but not Vincenzo Nibali. The Italian lived up to his reputation as the world's best downhill skier and only allowed his competitors to catch up a few meters behind the finish line.

Tchmil also achieved the solo victory

Something similar to Vincenzo Nibali is many years ago Andrei Tschmil succeded. The Belgian - known as a typical classic hunter of his time - even attacked one kilometer from the finish. Because the route at that time was even more sprinter-friendly, his successful start was even more surprising.
