Short news: The last few weeks have turned a lot of things upside down in our lives. The status of the bicycle was also redefined in society as a compelling argument for healthy private transport. However, no one would have expected that in April the bicycle would also outperform the car, which is so popular in Germany, in the Google Trends.
Bicycle trade between boom and depression
Spring is a roller coaster of emotions for the German bicycle trade. The lockdown followed the sales increases of early March. Then came the explosion in online retail and, at the latest since the reopening on April 20, also in stationary retail. This rediscovery of the love for bicycles, which was also supported by the good weather, also left its mark on the search trends of the online search engine Google in April. The Google Trends show: For the first time, Germans typed “bicycle” more often than “car” into the search mask.
Dream values in the Google search trends
The scale for determining the value in Google Trends ranges from 0 (insufficient data for the search term) to 100 (maximum popularity of the search term). Already on the Easter weekend from 10.-13. On April 19, the bicycle ranked ahead of the car in the search trends in Germany for the first time. However, the search term was the most popular on April 26 and 98, each with a fabulous value of XNUMX. Interesting: Germans particularly often searched for “buy a bicycle” or named the relevant dealers straight away.
The bicycle is overtaking toilet paper
So the trend towards bicycles is actually not misleading. ZEG boss Georg Honkomp also confirms this in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung: "We are now so stressed that we fall into bed dead tired in the evening and still get right back into the hamster cage in the morning [...] Our bikes and especially them It seems that e-bikes have replaced toilet paper as a product of desire.”
