Fortunately, the number of bicycles and e-bikes sold is increasing year after year. Unfortunately, thieves continue to use good opportunities. First and foremost are the major German cities. The online comparison portal Check24 recently published a ranking of the 25 bicycle theft strongholds in Germany. The inglorious winner surprises.
Bicycle theft in Germany: Leipzig is a sad top
The basis for determining the 25 most risky cities for two-wheelers is the official police crime statistics. In relation to 100.000 inhabitants, the East German metropolis of Leipzig took first place with 1.700 stolen bicycles in 2019. With 1.374 cases of theft per 100.000 inhabitants, the German bicycle city of Münster, which is known to pedal particularly often, follows at a considerable distance. Bremen took third place with 944 thefts per 100.000 inhabitants. At the bottom of the list are Bochum (210), Stuttgart (168) and Wuppertal (101). According to Check2019, 24 bicycles per 335 inhabitants were stolen in Germany in 100.000.

The number of bicycle thefts is declining
Even if the number of thefts is still high, the number of bicycle thefts in this country is decreasing. Within the last 27 years, the amount has even almost halved. In 1992 there were still 672 bicycle thefts per 100.000 inhabitants, but the current figure of 335 gives hope. Nevertheless, these are still 277.874 cases per year (2019).
The number of bicycle thefts, like other theft crimes, is falling much faster than the number of other crimes. The only downside: the clearance rate in 2019 was only around 10 percent. For comparison: In the case of motor vehicle theft, the figure was 28.132 percent in 28,8 cases. Good anti-theft protection via a lock and integrated tracking function is therefore still mandatory.
