Successful crossover concept: Testing the Dynamics E-Lightning 6 e-bike

28 April 2020 by Marcus Degen

Test Dynamics E-Lightning 6: The own brand of the two-wheeler center Stadler presents an SUV bike that combines functional features of the E-MTB with a character suitable for touring and thus closes an important gap. The whole results in a crossover bike at an interesting price.

An E-MTB - SUV bike suitable for everyday use, one would say in modern German

An e-mountain bike is not just a two-wheeler, but also a statement - and the more off-road it is, the clearer it is. Wide tires and long suspension travel suggest a thirst for adventure and driving skills, but that's not what many users are after. They want comfort and safety, and a real off-road bike is often too much for them. The reason for this is that the SUV category has recently become very popular – an e-bike that is very similar to a mountain bike in some respects, but is more restrained and more practical with equipment suitable for everyday use.

The E-Lightning 6 from Dynamics can be seen as an example of the genre. The own brand of the Stadler two-wheel center, which is represented throughout Germany, carries the bike among the E-MTBs, but you can see at first glance that this model is different. The trio of mudguards, side stand and lighting system makes it clear that sporty off-road use is not the focus of this bike, and the comparatively upright sitting position also speaks for itself: It is more reminiscent of the position on a trekking bike and ensures comfort and overview in traffic and is therefore ideal for numerous areas of application.

Suitable for everyday use: Little things like a solid side stand make everyday life easier
The charging socket and lock for removing the battery are hidden behind the flap
The Bosch drive is beautifully integrated and impresses with its quiet power

Low entry – if you want, you can opt for the men’s version with a straight top tube

As a single-tube version with a low entry, the E-Lightning is a dedicated unisex model, and that is also a clear statement in terms of functionality and comfort. The massive frame tube, which also houses the battery, merges extensively into the motor mount; together with the bar above the drive, an extremely stable combination is created, which makes the classic top tube superfluous. This makes getting on and off much easier, and this frame shape does not signal exaggerated sportiness to the observer, but rather an understanding of what really matters. And if you want, the Dynamics E-Lightning is also available as a classic "men's" version with a straight top tube.

The same applies to the drive. With the "Bosch Performance Line" unit, the Dynamics is definitely not overpowered, but it is by no means weak on the chest either: the propulsion is strong, but still starts harmoniously enough; on the ascent, the motor is also active at a sporty high pedaling frequency, showing its successful tuning. With a 625 watt hour battery, the range is extremely high. Tours over 100 km are no longer a problem, even with high support levels.

The shifting is a bit more modest with new gears in comparison, with the gradation of 11-36 teeth being quite large. In view of the powerful drive support, a finer gradation is not necessary anyway. The tried-and-tested Suntour suspension fork is more MTB than trekking bike: With a travel of 100 mm, it has a significantly longer travel than conventional examples, responds softly and can be adjusted sensitively.

The legislator no longer requires it, but the E-Lightning is equipped with a permanently installed lighting system that is fed by the drive battery. The headlight is not exactly overexposed at 30 lux, but of course it serves its purpose and indicates that Dynamics has put this bike on the bike more as a touring athlete than as an everyday bike. Anyone who strengthens themselves in the beer garden after a long drive over field and forest paths and one or the other trail and then starts their way home through the city does not necessarily need a lighting system at the level of a commuter.

After all, we don't want to forget that every single part on an e-bike costs money - and realizing a Bosch model with the largest single battery plus Intube frame for just under 2.800 euros is a good achievement anyway. Anyone who wants to convert or upgrade their E-Lightning is cordially invited to do so; for example, you can mount a luggage rack, and a spring-loaded seat post or a brighter spotlight could also be easily attached. The basis is there - and it is extremely high-quality and a complete success in terms of the overall concept.

Conclusion: Dynamics E-Lightning 6
