Cycling: Today stakeholders in cycling sat down and discussed a plan for a calendar after Corona. So the fans can be happy. Because all major events are to be made up for this year.
Cycling after Corona? Together we will make it!
As already suspected, the Tour de France from August 29 to September 20, 2020 be discharged. That – and many other details – were confirmed by the UCI, the world cycling association, this afternoon. Together with the organizers of the Tour de France (ASO), the Giro d'Italia (RCS) and the Vuelta a Espana (Unipublic), as well as the race organizer AIOCC, the representatives of Flanders Classics and the riders' union Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA). the UCI agreed on a basic scheme.
UCI President David Lappartient:
“With the coronavirus pandemic shaking the world, we still have work to do to finalize a fully revised UCI international calendar for 2020. Today, however, a first important step was taken. We have created a framework that upholds the fundamental rights of teams' riders and staff while allowing for the actions necessary for these teams to survive. Together we will manage to overcome this crisis and rebuild cycling.”
All monuments and grand tours are still scheduled to take place
When developing the new racing calendar for the time after the Corona crisis, the three major national tours, the five monuments in cycling and the world championship in Switzerland were given priority. All other events have to be subordinate to these cornerstones due to a lack of space in the calendar.
Was determined:
- There will be no WorldTour races until August 1st. However, competitions in lower categories are possible from July 1st - such as the Deutschland Tour, which is part of the ProSeries.
- The national championships are scheduled for April 22nd and 23rd. scheduled for Aug.
- The Tour de France is to be held from August 29th to September 20th.
- The program of the World Championships in Aigle-Martigny, Switzerland, remains unchanged on the scheduled date between September 20th and 27th. This means that the 21st stage of the Tour de France in Paris will take place parallel to the men's individual time trial at the World Championships.
- The Giro d'Italia is to be held after the UCI Road World Championships. Again after the Tour of Italy, plans are now being made for the Vuelta a Espana.
- The five major monuments in cycling should definitely not be postponed without replacement. However, when and where Milan – Sanremo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris – Roubaix, Liège – Bastogne – Liège and the Tour of Lombardy will find their place on the calendar is not yet clear.
