Best Cycling Movies #10: Overcoming

10 April 2020 by Michael Behringer

Cycling Movies

Cycling films: Bjarne Riis is in the documentation Overcoming in focus. The Dane won the Tour de France in 1996 and founded his own cycling team after retiring. This will be in Overcoming accompanied during the 2004 season. The German team P&S Metalltechnik recently had a similar documentary with them Pop stars in Poland put together - and three of you can win this film here!

Overcoming: A glimpse into the life of a team leader

Cycling movies abound these days. But Overcoming remains a very special masterpiece to this day. In this documentary, the focus is not on the drivers or the races, but on team boss Bjarne Riis. The winner of the 1996 Tour de France set up his own team after retiring. Within a few years he developed the underdog squad into the best team in the world. There is no other documentary that portrays the tasks that the head and sporting director of a cycling team has to face in such a thrilling and intense manner. The cameras were already there at the team camp at the beginning of the year, including when Ivan Basso signed the contract. The viewers get a deep insight into the emotional world of the protagonists and experience the human, as well as the perfectionist and ambitious Bjarne Riis as the mastermind. At the latest with the pictures of the Tour de France, the spark jumps over - guaranteed!

Jens Voigt also plays a key role

Jens Voigt drove for Bjarne Riis' team for seven years, initially under the name CSC, later Saxo-Bank. 2004 – so just in time for the documentation Overcoming – he switched to the Danish team. The Berliner already recognized in the training camp that working under Bjarne Riis is extremely hard and intense. At the Tour de France, Jens Voigt finally advanced to become a noble helper for the climbers Ivan Basso and Carlos Sastre. Jens Voigt was insulted by German fans when he thwarted Jan Ullrich's attempt to escape on one stage by working his pace in the peloton. This unpleasant experience also takes place on the DVD Overcoming his place. Above all, the German fighter himself has his say, giving the spectators an insight into his emotional world and the general tactics in cycling.

Unfortunately, the film is currently difficult to obtain. You can occasionally find it used on Amazon or eBay. In addition to the trailer, there are many other excerpts and extra material from the DVD to watch on YouTube.

Also worth seeing: Pop stars in Poland

The German continental team P&S Metalltechnik has released a documentary with a similar focus. The film was released in 2020 pop stars in Poland, which the team during the Tour of Poland Course Cycliste de Solidarnosc accompanied. Here, too, not only the drivers are interviewed, but above all Team boss Lars Wackernagel. The spectators sit next to him in the support vehicle and experience the races up close. Anyone who particularly likes such reporting in cycling will generally have a good chance of finding a new favorite team in the P&S Metalltechnik team. Because up YouTube Informative videos are constantly published showing the work of the team in and outside of the races.
