Best Cycling Movies #2: The Winners - American Flyers

2 April 2020 by Michael Behringer

Cycling Movies

Cycling films: In the second installment of our series, we present you with a relatively well-known one cycling movie. No wonder, because none other than Kevin Costner plays the leading role in American Flyers.

Here see how you can watch the film.

American Flyers: Cycling as Help & Fulfillment

First of all: In American flyers cycling is not the focus. But it is an important part of the US sports drama from 1985. After the death of their father, David and Marcus Sommers rediscover their zest for life in cycling. They are preparing for The Hell of the West bike race, which leads over the Rocky Mountains. But David does not know that his brother Marcus also suffers from a cerebral aneurysm - like their father.

The encyclopedia of international film:
"American Flyers is a respectable entertainment film with interesting, believable characters and easy-going dialogue, and a serious subject matter at its core."

Kevin Costner in one of his first films

He was 30 years old when this film hit theaters. Kevin Costner wasn't a superstar yet, but he was well on the way to becoming one. The California-born actor would have his career break five years later with the worldwide hit The one, who dances with the wolf celebrate. But already in American flyers he knew how to convince. He credibly embodied the role of Marcus Sommer, who caused sadness but also hope in the audience.
