Urwahn Bikes X Schmolke Carbon: High-end racer from the 3D printer

February 10, 2020 by Florian Nowak

Product news: The 3D printing pioneer Urwahn Bikes, together with the carbon specialist Schmolke Carbon, has launched a new racing bike in a class of its own. The greatest feature here is probably the high-quality steel frame from the 3D printer.

Just in time for the upcoming cycling season, Urwahn Bikes presented a high-end racing bike from the 3D printer. For this purpose, they would work together with the lightweight construction experts from Schmolke Carbon.

Together we have exploited the potential of §D Druck Technologe in our steel frame and combined it with performance-oriented carbon parts. – Sebastian Meinecke, Urwahn product designer

The exotic coating of the steel frame, which is entirely manufactured in Germany, is fully copper-plated and shows once again that you want to break new ground.

None other than track cycling world champion Stefan Bötticher saddled up as a test rider for the bike. The advantages of a combination of steel and carbon quickly became apparent in the velodrome test field, which even impressed the world champion: a comfortable geometry with impressive bottom bracket stiffness meets aerodynamic lightweight construction. The elastic suspension of the rear wheel guarantees additional riding comfort without sacrificing bottom bracket stiffness. This effect is particularly noticeable on longer rides and uneven sections of road, which should bring a decisive advantage compared to other very stiff frames.

Once you let this tiger out of the cage, you can only go forward! – Stefan Bötticher, track bike world champion and Urwahn test rider

On the Urwahn X Schmolke bike from the 3D printer, there is also a contemporary wireless shifting system with a Force eTAp groupset from Sram, while Schmolke Carbon reduces the system weight downwards with extremely lightweight carbon components. The 45mm carbon clinchers also offer a first-class combination of low weight and performance. With approx. 9,0 kilos in frame size M, the steel road bike shows its best side.

Everyone who is enthusiastic about a bike from the 3D printer should be quick, because this model is a limited special edition. The racing bike is available exclusively from Urwahn Bikes and Schmolke Carbon for 8.499 euros.

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
