Vuelta San Juan #6: Zdenek Stybar fools the sprinters

2. February 2020 by Michael Behringer

Stybar Zdenek San Juan

Cycling: There's really no better way to win a stage. Zdenek Stybar (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) attacked about a kilometer from the finish on the sixth stage of the Vuelta a San Juan, surprising all the sprinters.

Zdenek Stybar races up and away from the race track

On the Circuito San Juan Villicúm motorsport race track, the cars usually rush around the corners at a hell of a pace. But today it wasn't a car and it wasn't a motorcycle either – it was Zdenek Stybar (Deceuninck - Quick Step). The Czech attacked in the last kilometer and surprised all the sprinters. Almost caught up with him Juan Molano (UAE Team Emirates) and Rudy Barber (Israel Start Up Nation). But the two sprinters ultimately only managed second and third place. Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) and Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) even had to settle for places #6 and #12.

Trio & quartet without a chance

A few escapees had also calculated a surprise coup today. But they shouldn't succeed. First coined a trio consisting of Christopher Jurado (Panama), Veljko Stojnik (Vini Zabu – KTM) and Jokin Aranburu (Fundación – Orbea) the race events. But although the three already had a lead of more than four minutes, they were caught again between 80 and 90 kilometers. After that he joined in Mirco Maestri (Bardiani – CSF – Faizanè), Andrea DiRenzo (Vini Zabu – KTM), Laureano Rosas (Transporte Puertas de Cuyo) and Augustin Fraysse (Argentina) even a quartet on the way. But they were only allowed a lead of around a minute and were eventually brought back around 20 kilometers from the finish.

Guillaume Martin secures victory in the mountains classification

In today's sixth stage of the Vuelta a San Juan, there were no changes in the top positions in the overall standings. So stands Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) before the overall victory. Things got a lot more exciting in the mountain classification. That's where the Frenchman lay before the start of this stage William Martin (Cofidis) and the Colombian Cesar Nicolas Paredes (Medellin) equal. So there was a showdown in the last mountain classification of the day - which Guillaume Martin won. Since there are no more points to be awarded on the final stage tomorrow, his victory in the mountains classification is certain early on. The 26-year-old is already celebrating the first success of the new season for his new team.

That's how you do it 😃
