Etoile de Bessèges #3: Zimmermann misses the stage win, Moschetti falls

February 8, 2020 by Michael Behringer

Carpenter Moschetti Etoile de Bessèges

Cycling: Georg Zimmermann (CCC) almost won the third stage of the Étoile de Bessèges. The German just barely missed winning the day. He has been wearing the mountain jersey since day #1. Italian Matteo Moschetti (Trek – Segafredo) fell badly yesterday.

Matteo Moschetti may need an operation

The season started with two wins within the first races Matteo Moschetti (Trek – Segafredo) like in a picture book. But now the 23-year-old has to accept a severe setback. The Italian sprinter fell on yesterday's third stage of the Étoile de Bessèges and fractured his right acetabulum. After his fall 15 kilometers from the finish, he was taken straight to the Hospital Center Alès-Cévennes. As his team Trek – Segafredo announced, a decision will be made on Saturday whether an operation will be necessary. Matteo Moschetti has already impressed with two wins in the Mallorca Challenge this season. There he won Palma Trophy and Trophy Ses Salines – Felanitx each ahead of Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe).

Georg Zimmermann narrowly missed out on winning the stage in a mountain jersey

The five-day Étoile de Bessèges is currently led by Alexys Brunel (Groupama – FDJ). The 21-year-old Frenchman won the opening stage ahead of his compatriot Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale) and has worn the leader's jersey ever since. Conquered directly on the first section George Zimmerman (CCC) the mountain jersey. The German went on the offensive on the third stage as well. He just missed out on winning the day. The Belgian secured this yesterday in front of him Dries de Bondt (Alpecin-Fenix). On the second day was the Dane Magnus Court (EF) successful in front of the Norwegian Edvald Boasson-Hagen (NTT)
