Vuelta San Juan #5: Flórez celebrates victory, Evenepoel ahead of overall victory

31 January 2020 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) successfully defended his overall lead at the Vuelta a San Juan. On the queen stage, he finished just a few seconds behind winner Miguel Eduardo Flórez (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec). This puts the young Belgian on the verge of overall victory.

Evenepoel maintains his lead

In the last two years, the winner on the Alto Colorado has won the overall classification of the Vuelta a San Juan. That probably won't be the case this season - but it will be Miguel Eduardo Florez (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) happy about the day's win. On the verge of overall victory now Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), who took the lead in the overall standings in the time trial and was able to successfully defend it on today's queen stage after the rest day.

After starting in San Martín, the pros had to cover 169,5 kilometers to the summit of the Alto Colorado. The UAE Team Emirates invested a lot of energy. Was planned, Brandon McNulty to take on the leadership role. Despite a courageous attack on the final climb - and Remco Evenepoel's already relatively large deficit - the American was ultimately unsuccessful.

Miguel Eduardo Flórez secured the stage victory with a late attack. While Remco Evenepoel set the pace in the first group, the young Colombian took off. The competition could or wanted to 1.000 Meter didn't rule immediately – and then it was too late. Even for old masters Oscar Seville (Medellin), ahead of Brandon McNulty and William Martin (Cofidis) was able to look forward to second place.
