Germany Tour: The first stage leads from Stralsund to Schwerin

30 January 2020 by Michael Behringer

Germany tour 2020 cancelled

Cycling: The Deutschland Tour 2020 is taking shape. As officially announced today, the opening stage on August 20th will lead from Stralsund to Schwerin. It was already clear: the Germany tour ends three days later in Nuremberg.

Germany Tour 2020: From Northeast to South

The Deutschland Tour 2020 runs over four stages from August 20th to 23rd. The drivers will have to cover a long distance. Because now it is certain: The tour will start in Stralsund and lead to Schwerin on the first stage. The stages of the next two days have not yet been determined. What is certain, however, is that the pros will head south as the Tour of Nuremberg will end.

Claude Rach, Managing Director of the Society for the Promotion of Cycling:
“The start of the Deutschland Tour in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is full of premieres. We are visiting north-east Germany for the first time, with Stralsund being a Hanseatic city for the first time, and with the Baltic Sea we are having a stretch of coast in our program for the first time. The stage final in Schwerin, on the other hand, continues a beautiful tradition with which the state capitals are an enthusiastic part of the Deutschland Tour. Holidaymakers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can now include the Germany Tour in their holiday program and celebrate the bike together with us.”

Many visitors are expected in Stralsund

It is worthwhile for visitors to stay in Stralsund one day before the start. Then, as usual, all drivers and jerseys will be presented there on the stage at the team presentation. The organizers also hope that many holidaymakers will come to the route and cheer for the professionals at the start of the tour in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Stralsund.

alexander badrow, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Stralsund
“With the Deutschland Tour, we have succeeded in bringing a top sporting event to Stralsund. Together with some of the world's best cyclists, we will send exciting pictures from the most beautiful Hanseatic city in the world around the globe. In addition to the cycling stars, we are also looking forward to the many guests at the Strelasund. Because Stralsund is not only a historic Hanseatic city and a world heritage city, but also a modern sports city with major events such as Sundschwimmen, Rügenbrückenlauf and triathlon. With this enthusiasm we welcome the professionals in August.”

A premiere: The Deutschland Tour leads along the coast

Even if there will probably be a mass sprint on the first stage, the route from Western Pomerania to Mecklenburg should make for an interesting start - and not just from a tourist point of view. Because the section is to be carried out over many kilometers along the coast. Wind relays are pre-programmed!

Harry Glawe, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania's Economics Minister:
“Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is particularly looking forward to the Deutschland Tour in summer. We are part of it. This is the best advertising for our state to present itself from the sporty side along the route. At the same time, we draw the attention of sports fans to our country with our natural beauties and the developed infrastructure. Cycling in nature and especially cycling are becoming increasingly popular throughout Germany. A big bike festival is being planned here, in which children and adults can also actively participate.”

30 years Mecklenburg-West Pomerania

In addition to the sporting highlight in August, the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also celebrates its own birthday. It was in 1990 when the state was re-established. True to the motto "30 years MV" the first stage winner will be chosen in front of Schwerin Castle. By the way: Four weeks earlier, the Federal Cycling Meeting takes place here, where amateur athletes from all over the country get on their bikes themselves.

dr Rico Badenschier, Mayor of the state capital Schwerin:
“The state capital offers a wonderful backdrop with its landmark, Schwerin Castle. We look forward to the unique images with which we can advertise our open, innovative and livable city. And we look forward to many visitors joining us on August 20th to cheer on the athletes and celebrate the bike. Because the Deutschland Tour is also an opportunity for us to get people excited about everyday cycling in Schwerin.”

🥁 The first stage and the big start of the Deutschland Tour 2020 is here! We are looking forward to beautiful Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, our starting point @StadtStralsund and the thrilling first showdown of the top sprinters in Schwerin. We can hardly wait! 😃 pic.twitter.com/2hJiEbO09Q
