Nicolai Saturn 14 ST: New super trail bike from Germany

19 December 2019 by Michael Faiss

Nicolai Saturn 14 ST

Product news / MTB: With the Saturn 2019, Nicolai only presented a completely new trail bike for the 14 season on the popular Saturn platform. The response exceeded all expectations, but many bikers wished that this rather "light" trail bike could be parked and had more trail potential. True to the motto 'The customer is king', Nicolai reacts and introduces the Saturn 14 ST – ST stands for Super Trail.

When Nicolai presented the Saturn 14 a little over a year ago, the trail bike was presented as an off-road all-rounder: With its enormous qualities in uphill and downhill, they hadn't promised too much, which we were able to convince ourselves of in the meantime by testing . The bike was also well received by the community, but a significant number of potential buyers expressed two wishes: On the one hand, they wanted bike park approval (almost 'used' by Nicolai) and the option of using thicker forks than 34mm stanchions. So more gravity performance.

The Saturn 14 ST complete bike is equipped with high-quality equipment and starts at 6.499 euros.

With Super Trail to a better all-rounder?

Since Nicolai is still one of the few manufacturers to produce the frames themselves in this country, you can react to such requests quite quickly there; said and done! The new Nicolai Saturn 14 ST was born from customer feedback. The suffix ST may seem familiar to one or the other Nicolai fan of the past. This used to stand for Super Travel and designated frames with extra travel. However, in the case of the Saturn 14, ST stands for Super Trail – the suspension travel stays within the frame at almost 140mm, but otherwise the adjustment screws have been turned significantly more in the direction of downhill.

The ST frame weighs only 300g more than the well-known Saturn 14.

Significantly more trail potential in this case means: more material on the down tube, seat tube and top tube, additional gussets on the head tube and modifications to the swing arm. This is how the Nicolai 14 ST gets the "blessing" for the park. For Nicolai, this means that it not only has to withstand the stress of a clean run, but also be able to cope better with mistakes (i.e. falls). This expands the area of application of the all-rounder even further - the frame weight only increases by a tolerable 300g to 3,25kg.

The significantly more robust design of the new frame variant becomes clear here.

Two wheel sizes and hybrid variant - geometry as usual

Like its somewhat lighter sister bike, the Saturn 14, which is still in the range, the 14 ST can also be ridden with both common wheel sizes – 29 inches and 27,5 inches. This is made possible by the strut mutator and various headsets. With 29 inches you are set to 130mm of spring travel in the rear, if you are on smaller 27,5″ tires you can ride with larger shock absorber strokes of up to 138mm. In addition, the Nicolai Saturn 14 ST will also be available as a "hybrid" variant, which is becoming increasingly popular: Large 29″ wheels at the front, 27,5″ at the rear.

The strut mutator (black component in the picture) allows different wheel sizes to be ridden.
Milling art typical of Nicolai can be found almost everywhere on the frame of the Saturn 14 ST.
The strut mutator (black component in the picture) allows different wheel sizes to be ridden.

The frame geometry itself was also extremely suitable for trails on the well-known Saturn 14 and was therefore not changed for the Super Trail version either. There are minimal changes resulting from the different wheel size options.
