BMW e-scooters: Toy or practical everyday companion?

27 November 2019 by the editorial office

Test / E-Scooter: Nothing is currently more trendy than e-scooters. The little companions are available for purchase in a price range from €500 to €2.500. But there are also representatives of the rental concept on every street corner in major German cities. We have extensively tested the new BMW e-scooter. What can the €799 cheap e-scooter with the propeller emblem do?

fun in the city? The BMW e-scooter can also be fast at times.

BMW E-Scooter: First impression

The BMW Micro E-Scooter is quick to unpack and screw together, and the folding mechanism is also easy to see through. So we plug our scooter into the socket to fully charge it with the supplied charger within just two and a half hours.

The folding mechanism is quickly unlocked.
Compact and easy to transport at 9,9 kg.

With the help of the lever on the handlebar, the BMW e-scooter can be folded up quickly and easily. The steering unit is simply folded back and hung with the upper hook on the mudguard of the rear wheel. The scooter can also be unlocked with a flick of the wrist. A tap with your foot on the mudguard is enough and the BMW e-scooter can be reassembled.

With this hook the handlebar is hung on the fender.
Once hooked in, the system can be easily unlocked again.

Despite this simple mechanism, the system holds up very well and the transport works without restrictions.

BMW e-scooters: driving pleasure?

The BMW e-scooter has a total of four driving modes - Passer, Eco, Standard and Sport. These four modes differ in the limitation of the maximum power and the maximum speed. The only drawback: The change between the driving modes is only possible with the free Micro Mobility App. A small control unit on the handlebars would make handling much easier.

Driving modes and other settings can be made via the app.

Driving mode Wattage Vmax in km/h
passing 200 6
Eco 125 14
Standard 160 16
Sports 200 20

The performance data initially read very promising. But in the entire practical test we could not reach the 20 km/h mark. A slight incline is probably necessary for this. The different driving modes have a subtle effect on the response behavior, but mainly on the speed that can be reached.

Unfortunately, despite the sport mode, you are always feeling a bit sluggish and somehow it feels as if there is still room for improvement - but it is not. Despite the relatively level paths with no gradients or inclines, the BMW e-scooter doesn't get the maximum out of itself. As soon as there is an incline, even if it is only slight, the speed drops rapidly and the performance is no longer sufficient. Compared to the common rental e-scooters in the big cities, the necessary torque is missing here.

BMW e-scooter: practical for the last mile?

One full throttle please. The easy handling including charge status display.

The most important question for commuters is probably: Is the BMW e-scooter suitable for my last mile? Because the way to the office is often longer than you think and you should arrive there with relish. When folded, the scooter also fits into any trunk. But it still takes up a lot of space, especially since the handles cannot be folded or removed.

High speed? Only on the level.

We put the BMW e-scooter to the most common commuter challenges. Arriving early in the morning at the parking lot or bus stop near the company premises used to mean “marching”. With the new mobility concept of an e-scooter, this should be a thing of the past.

The BMW e-scooter is quickly ready to drive. Unfold, switch on and off you go. Especially now in the dark season, the light is very important. The front and rear lights of the scooter are bright enough to be seen. More is usually not necessary. Once you are on the road, the first challenge comes, a curb. Due to the 20 cm large front wheel, such bumps are usually not a real obstacle. In addition, the front wheel is slightly dampened, which brings a plus in driving comfort.

Once you have arrived at the company premises, a turnstile is already waiting. Thanks to the simple folding mechanism, the BMW e-scooter can be folded up quickly. You can also easily and conveniently get through the usual admission controls upright. The last mile has been mastered and now the question arises, where to put it? Either take it to the office or lock it with the app. If the BMW e-scooter is locked via the app, the drive blocks and the scooter is almost useless. He can only be carried away.

The BMW e-scooter is a practical companion for the famous last mile. However, commuters will only be able to use it if the last mile is absolutely flat and does not have any inclines. Because here the BMW e-scooter has a clear disadvantage. The performance is simply not enough. At least for a normal-weight adult. With a permissible total weight of 100kg, the drive with its specified 200 watt output power is too weak.
