BBB Cycling Deltashield BBW 268 on test: Inexpensive weather protection for autumn and winter

28 November 2019 by the editorial office

Test: A rain jacket with an all-round character should combine quite a few attributes. Waterproof and windproof – of course! In the best-case scenario, however, it should also keep the cold out. At the same time, however, you start to sweat even in cold, wet November weather and breathability is of course just as important here. The BBB Cycling Deltashield BBW 268 should combine all these features in one jacket at a fair price. You can find out in the following test report whether the Deltashield was always able to get me to my destination warm and dry.

The offseason is already in full swing in most parts of Germany and you keep coming across the sentence: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes”. Even if hardly anyone likes to hear this sentence, in my opinion it corresponds at least in part to the truth. But it's easy to find excuses when the weather is bad, and the misconception that biking is only fun when the sun is shining is unfortunately widespread.

BBB Cycling wants to support us with their products for everything to do with biking and prevent us from spending the cold season in front of the PC and on the couch. After all, what use is the most fun trail, the most powerful Superenduro or a great bike path in front of the door if we don't go outside and pursue our passion? Right, very little.

The roomy hood and waterproof chest pocket are great features that we can use to make our off-season rides more comfortable.

A look at the specifications of the BBB Cycling Deltashield BBW268

The Deltashield BBW268 is available in dark red and black with neon yellow accents. When it comes to the material, BBB Cycling relies on stable polyester, which is additionally reinforced on the forearms, shoulders and sides. Both variants are optically kept very simple, but they still look quite sporty and chic. The rain jacket is available in six different sizes from S to XXXL and weighs a comfortable 520g in the tested size.

The DeltaShield consists of 2,5 layers, which have a water column of 10.000mm thanks to the breathable Aquatec membrane. Together with the generous, helmet-compatible hood, the fully sealed zips provide a lot of protection against the ingress of moisture. The mesh inner lining ensures optimal air circulation and sufficient moisture removal and has a breathability of 10.000g, which looks like a good deal for €149,95. Last but not least, the BBW268 has two side pockets and one breast pocket. The completely waterproof chest pocket in particular deserves a thumbs up, as it also has sealed seams on the inside to keep your cell phone or wallet dry.

The completely sealed zip and numerous cords ensure that the DeltaShield offers excellent protection against the cold and wet.

side facts

The first time you tried it on, it was noticeable that the DeltaShield has a sporty cut, but is not too tight, especially on the back and shoulders, and thus provides enormous freedom of movement. Super suitable for the wide range of purposes to which it has been exposed in recent months. It already found its place as a light transitional jacket over the protector on a few cooler bike park mornings in summer. Here she was able to convince me throughout, as she offers a lot of freedom of movement and was able to cope with light falls without leaving any marks. The polyester fabric chosen by the Dutchman showed its all-round character in the test, because even leisurely climbs are no problem thanks to the breathable fabric. However, the DeltaShield also has its limits, because it is simply the wrong companion for crossing the Alps at 22°C, as it has no ventilation openings.

The core competence of the Deltashield - keeping the driver dry

The BBB Cycling DeltaShield is all about one thing: protecting the rider from the ingress of moisture. It was precisely here that she was able to convince me in the practical test, above all with her good workmanship and her coherent overall concept. Zip up, collar up and tie up nicely - you're ready to go, even in the most difficult conditions. With a total of five cords on the hood, collar and waistband of the jacket, it is possible to protect yourself completely against the ingress of wind and moisture.

The water column of 10.000 mm keeps what it promises and protects very reliably for a long time. After two days of continuous rain, like on my weekend trip to the Leogang bike park, the Delta Shield unfortunately no longer held watertight, also due to the fact that there was no drying facility. However, it is only possible to rate this to a limited extent, because the price is comparatively cheap and there are of course certain limits with other jackets with similar specifications.

Otherwise, the DeltaShield didn't let me down and always got me to my destination dry. The rain jacket also held up well against the November cold, as you can pack it almost completely airtight and the wind is noticeably reduced. At the moment it is my companion on every enduro tour and every night ride on our home trails. The three pockets of the Deltashield are all spacious and easily accessible even with gloves, although the zip pullers broke after a relatively short time. However, the zippers on the BBW268 generally deserve a lot of praise, as they are still buttery soft to use and waterproof even after 50 days of use. The general processing of the BBB Cycling DeltaShield BBW268 is great, especially since the fabric was not given any care until a few days ago and yet there was no noticeable effect on the tightness of the jacket.

With the DeltaShield you are prepared for almost anything. In the long-term practical test, it did very well and I had a lot of fun in bad weather.

additional protection

The DeltaShield Trousers represent the counterpart to the rain jacket and should also be individually adjustable. Unfortunately, we didn't have the opportunity to put them to a practical test, but we're confident that they're also top-quality. The pants are very light and have a fairly small pack size, so they can be easily stowed in a backpack. The rain pants are priced at just under 100 euros. With the DeltaShield Short the Dutch also present shorts for wet days.

BBB Cycling

Of course, BBB Cycling does not only offer rainwear, but their more than 1500 products range from clothing and accessories to tools and spare parts. Listing all of this here would probably go beyond the scope of this test report, but I can still tell you about the entire range Rainwear refer. The Dutch are well positioned here and it is not for nothing that they have received more than 100 product and innovation awards.
