Junior Women's World Championship Road Race: Tension & Falls
It was ladies first at the Road World Championships in Yorkshire today. At 9:40 a.m. the strongest juniors in the world had to get on their bikes. The distance from Doncaster to Harrogate was 86,0 kilometres. Unsurprisingly, it was supposed to rain again today, albeit not as heavily as during the previous events. However, the field of more than 100 women was not impressed by this. In an exciting race, shortly before the finish, two women from France and Chile who had escaped were caught by the peloton. The USA, Great Britain and the Netherlands were primarily responsible for this.
With about three kilometers to go, it was the Russian Aigul Gareeva, which launched the decisive attack. Together with the American Megan Jastrab she was able to break free and sprint for the win. But the sprint began from the peloton, while the leading duo were already tactical. As a result, the Belgian moved Julie de Wilde and the Dutch woman Like Nooijen still past Aigul Gareeva. However, Megan Jastrab was already able to celebrate her world title.
Shortly before, there had been falls involving the Germans Lucy Mayrhofer and Paula Leonhardt, among others. As a result, they had no chance of a front placement. Things went better for Switzerland. Noemi Rüegg and Noelle Buri knew how to convince with the ranks #6 and #16.
U23 World Championship road race: Stefan Bissegger wins bronze
The U173,0 class had to cover a whopping 23 kilometers in Yorkshire in the late afternoon. After the journey from Doncaster to Harrogate, the well-known and demanding circuit awaited, which had to be driven on several times. A five-man leading group established itself there, which from then on was chased by an ever-shrinking peloton. 6,0 kilometers from the finish Stephen Bissegger an attack from the escape group. The Swiss seemed to have the best legs but was only able to shake off one of his companions.
Meanwhile, in the final lap, a four-man chasing group formed with the German george carpenter, which had to be torn down a little later. In an exciting chase, the trio managed to close the gap with one kilometer to go. Although the Dutchman Nils Eekhoff had to work a lot with the tracking work, he managed to win the sprint. The Italian will be particularly annoyed about this Samuele Battistella, who probably would have won gold without the late catch. Stefan Bissegger from Switzerland can go home with the bronze medal. Georg Zimmermann finished 13th as the best German.
