September 26, 2019 by Michael Behringer

Qunn Simmons World Championship Juniors

Cycling: Quinn Simmons easily won the gold medal at the World Championship road race for juniors. The American was able to break away from a leading group in good time and from then on kept the field at bay. Unfortunately, the German top favorite Marco Brenner missed a medal.

Strong Americans in the junior road race

On the 148,1-kilometre course from Richmond to Harrogate, in the pouring rain and strong winds, it was a long time before any leading group could really pull away. While the British kept trying to attack, the Germans and the Americans took over the dictate of the pace in the peloton. When the USA picked up the pace again uphill, the field fell apart. Three climbs had to be completed in the first 100,0 kilometers before the three final laps were tackled. It was possible from a leading group quinn simmons, to establish himself as a soloist. The American benefited from the disagreement in the peloton, which had become smaller. By the time the Italians and Germans agreed, the 18-year-old had a lead of around a minute. When the Italians picked up the pace again 20,0 kilometers from the finish, the 18-year-old, who was also XNUMX, was able to do it Alessio Martinelli to solve.

Simmons wins gold ahead of Martinelli and Sheffield

Although he started the race as a favourite, it was the only 17-year-old Marco Brenner not possible today to call the decisive attacks. The German finished 14th and drove to the end in the main field, which was only around 15 strong and was controlled by the Americans from then on. So it was clear that the two leaders, gold and silver, would not let themselves be taken away. But Alessio Martinelli also had to end the dominance of Quinn Simmons recognize. The American kept his lead and thus secured his first World Championship title in the juniors. Behind it must Alessio Martinelli settle for the silver medal. Bronze went to the Americans in the sprint Magnus Sheffield, who previously worked a lot for the new world champion.
