Cycling: Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek - Segafredo) are the big winners of the third stage of the Deutschland Tour. While Asgreen won the section, Stuyven can be happy about the overall lead.
Heming, Alaphilippe & Pedersen escape
The pros on the Deutschland Tour had to cover 189 kilometers from Göttingen to Eisenach today. With very warm temperatures again, a breakaway group of three broke away early on. The only 19 year old Mika Heming (Dauner – Akkon) formed together with Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick Step) and Mads pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) a very powerful trio. And actually, the peloton could have let the three go, because Julian Alaphilippe was the best-placed overall with a deficit of more than 16 minutes. But in the main field, the UAE team Emirates and Bahrain - Merida did not give up. The lead of more than eight minutes shrank. After all, Miká Heming was able to secure the first mountain classification and gain a lot of experience that day. However, the new leader in the mountains classification is Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain – Merida) as the group was previously set.
Deceuninck - Quick-Step goes on the attack
After the Deutschland Tour crossed the former inner-German border three times today to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and switched between West and East Germany, the pros arrived in Eisenach. There was still an extra lap to do, so that the spectators in the finish area got to see their stars twice today. Above all, the Deceuninck – Quick-Step team presented itself actively here. After Julian Alaphilippe was already in the group, attacked after catching it Remco Evenepoel. But the peloton wouldn't let him go anymore. After that, Quick-Step changed tactics and set the pace in the field from the front. So the peloton was thinned out properly. Among other things also flew Nils Politt (Katusha – Alpecin) and the leader alexander kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) back.
Stuyven & Asgreen agree
When the Hohe Sonne went up for the last time, the first group sprinted for the bonus seconds. This one could alexey lutsenko (Astana) secure. He sat down with three other professionals, but they didn't pull through. So the first group was filled up again to up to 20 men. Because the pursuers around alexander kristoff too far behind, the tactics began in the last few kilometers. As well as Simon Geschke (CCC), as well Emmanuel Buchman (Bora - hansgrohe) tried to break away because they were inferior in a sprint. But the competition reacted. As Jasper stuyven (Trek – Segafredo) and Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) competed, but no one had anything to oppose. The two talked and threw everything into the balance. At the end both were happy. Asgreen wins the stage, Stuyven takes over Red. 17 seconds behind led Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain – Merida) the pursuers across the finish line.
