Clothing: Test: Fizik Infinito R1 Knit & X1- The best of both worlds

July 25, 2019 by Florian Nowak

Test: The two Fizik Infinito models stand for performance, light weight, power transmission and comfort. Both the racing bike and the top mountain bike model from Fizik bear the name Infinito, with the R1 Knit model being the road version and the X1 model being the off-road version. We have tested both shoes extensively for you.

The two Fizik Infinito models for road and mountain bike not only share the same name, but are also relatively similar in terms of shape and performance.

Fizik Infinito R1 Knit – The Roadie

The Fizik Infinito R1 Knit has long been one of the most popular cycling shoes in the professional peloton. Geraint Thomas wore this shoe to his Tour de France victory last year and is currently wearing it in the fight for the yellow jersey.

The Fizik Infinito R1 Knit is primarily characterized by its precision-engineered knit material, which is used for the first time in cycling shoes and is perfectly suited for high-performance road shoes. Comfort, fit and power transfer are unmatched with the new technologies, combination of materials and improved design based on pro feedback and input.

The new knitted material option means instant comfort and truly exceptional ventilation. You can feel this clearly on the first rides with the new Fizik Infinito R1 Knit, as it adapts perfectly to the foot without pinching. The Fizik Infinito R1 Knit takes its name from the unique knit material and the Infinito Closure System, which has two micro-adjustable double Boa IP1-B closures. These can be finely adjusted and offer a pleasant level of comfort despite a firm hold.

The use of carefully crafted upper material eliminates pressure points and offers an individually adaptable shape. A full carbon outsole that is ventilated for improved rider comfort and temperature regulation and offers best in class stiffness with low weight. The good power transmission can be felt when pedaling firmly or in a sprint, as you feel directly connected to the pedal. Despite the good stiffness, the Fizik Infinito R1 Knit also offers good comfort on the underfoot, which of course made the ride very pleasant for us.

Fizik Infinito X1 – The biker

Similar to the Infinito Road model, the Fizik Infinito X1 was developed together with the most successful professionals on the scene. The aim was to only use the latest technologies and the best materials, all with an improved design based on feedback and suggestions from the drivers.

With an ideal fit, premium comfort, lightweight protection and unmatched power transfer, the Fizik Infinito X1 off-road cycling shoe offers ultimate performance for cross-country races and trails. The new Infinito Closure System, its strong, stiff sole, weight-saving materials and the intelligent implementation of new technologies make this high-end mountain bike shoe what it is.

The Infinito Closure System is equipped with two micro-adjustable Boa IP1-B for infinite adjustment. The fit of the upper on the forefoot is impressive and hardly noticeable after just a few minutes. This is certainly also due to the fact that the shoe has no pressure points that could become uncomfortable. The so-called Dynamic Arch Support Technology from Fizik and the Increased Volume Control System ensure the ideal fit and best performance with pleasant comfort. This allows the Microtex upper of the entire shoe to be molded directly around the foot profile.

The protective upper works in harmony with the new mesh footbed sole and improves ventilation and comfort. Its laterally stiff, light Uni Direction Full Carbon outsole is ventilated and offers great power transmission. Nevertheless, it is not too hard off-road and on the trails, which could quickly become uncomfortable.
