June 20, 2019 by Michael Behringer

Tolhoek Tour de Suisse

Cycling: Antwan Tolhoek (Jumbo – Visma) won the mountain finish at Flumserberg. On the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse, the Dutchman prevailed as a breakaway. Behind him, top favorite Egan Bernal (Ineos) took second place. As a result, the Colombian also took the lead in the overall standings.

First endurance test for the favorites

Today it was mountainous for the first time at the Tour de Suisse. The 120,2 kilometer stage from Einsiedeln up to the Flumserberg winter sports region was a clear affair for the climbers. The Flumserberg is a category 1.220 climb at 8,5 meters, 9,0 kilometers long and with an average gradient of 7,0 percent. The gradient values are constantly between 11,0 and XNUMX percent. Despite its regularity, it is of course not to be described as a roller mountain due to the enormous incline. Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) therefore had no chance of defending the yellow jersey. However, 25 breakaways tried their luck in the group of the day, including the German Nickias Arndt (Sunweb) as well Gian Friesecke, Claudio Imhof and Simon Pellaud from the Swiss national team. But at the beginning of the final climb, their lead over the peloton was just over two minutes.

Tolhoek saves himself from Bernal to the finish

In the group of favorites, however, a leisurely pace was initially struck. The Ineos team was late to score in person Kenny Elissonde increase. Two kilometers from the finish, Top-Favorit attacked Egan Bernal (Ineo). The Colombian immediately opened a gap and gradually caught the breakaways. Only one he could not collect for a few seconds. Antwan Tolhoek (Jumbo – Visma) proved to be the strongest climber in the group. Egan Bernal, on the other hand, impressively underlined his role as a favourite. The Colombian now leads the overall standings by twelve seconds Rohan Dennis (Bahrain - Merida), who was beaten up by Egan Bernal to 29 seconds today. The Austrian is new overall third Patrick Conrad (Bora – hansgrohe), who was among the best today with tenth place. Stark also presented himself Patrick Schelling (Swiss national team) in ninth place.
