cycling: Critérium du Dauphiné #7: Buchmann climbs to 3rd place

June 15, 2019 by Michael Behringer

Tour de France 2020 Poels

Cycling: Emanuel Buchmann (Bora – hansgrohe) didn't let himself be boiled off today in the rain chaos at the Critérium du Dauphiné. The German finished third in the stage behind Wout Poels (Ineos) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana). This puts him fourth in the overall standings ahead of tomorrow's final stage.

Dumoulin and Greipel give up

The pros only had to cover 133,5 kilometers today in the Critérium du Dauphiné from Saint-Genix-les-Villages to Les Sept Laux-Pipay. The section was certainly not easy. The riders had to face three climbs of the first category before they had to master another mountain of the highest category, the mountain finish at Montée de Pipay. Two celebrities didn't want to torture themselves to the finish line at 1.561 meters. Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) retired due to a precaution regarding his knee, André Greipel (Arkéa – Samsic) is ill with stomach bacteria. However, today's more than 20 breakaways had hopes for a good result. Eventually they could alexey lutsenko (Astana) and Michael Woods (EF Education First) separate from their peers.

A huge puddle 50 meters from the finish line

Like yesterday, the drivers had to cope with very changeable weather conditions today. Because of a cloudburst, it suddenly started to rain heavily. Therefore, the stage threatened to fall completely into the water. 50 meters before the finish line there was even a huge puddle of water due to the heavy rain.

Emanuel Buchmann attacks

The pace of the Movistar team in the peloton reduced the breakaway group's lead. This investment was also necessary, because finally drove alexey lutsenko already virtually in the yellow jersey. Eleven kilometers before the finish opened Nairo Quintana (Movistar) in the pouring rain the fight of the favorites. Together with Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos) he was able to pull away a bit. Later, the Polish champion was the first driver to catch up with the top. But four kilometers before the finish, the trio was caught by the still quite large group of favorites. More attacks followed immediately. Among other things Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) and Wout poels (Ineos) tried their luck. But it was only successful Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) and Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe) to create another gap.

Wout Poels with a one kilometer sprint

Together we succeeded Jakob Fuglsang and Emmanuel Buchmanto keep the pursuers at a distance. Only Wout poels was able to reestablish contact with an attack under the Flame Rouge. Instead of hanging out with the other two, he sprinted straight through to the finish line. The Dutchman celebrates the stage victory in front of the Dane Jakob Fuglsang. In turn, he can be happy about the yellow jersey because he is the leader Adam Yates (Mitchelton – Scott) lost a few seconds. A strong third was the German Emanuel Buchmann, who thus positioned himself perfectly in the overall standings. Tomorrow there are seven mountain classifications on the 113,5 kilometer short final stage. The overall winner will then be chosen in Champéry.
