cycling: Chris Froome fractured his femur, elbow and multiple ribs

June 12, 2019 by Michael Behringer

Froome Chris fall Dauphine

Cycling: As expected, Chris Froome sustained serious injuries when he fell this morning. The Brit broke his thigh, elbow and several ribs.

Ineos confirms the injuries

As expected, Chris Froome sustained severe injuries in his fall this morning. The Brit was caught by a strong gust of wind during the course inspection for the individual time trial of the Critérium du Dauphiné. According to Dave Brailsford, Chris Froome was blowing his nose when he lost control of his ride. Wout Poels – who drove the route together with his teammate – confirmed the statements. At the same time, Chris Froome was lucky in his misfortune, because an ambulance was already parked at the side of the track at the scene of the accident.

Wout Poels:
“It was pretty windy, especially when you're on a time trial bike. We had about 65 kilometers per hour on it. When you crash at that speed you know it's not going to end well.”

Further treatments in St. Etienne

In a press release, Team Ineos has confirmed that Chris Froome has broken his femur, an elbow and several ribs. The Briton was initially examined at Roanne hospital. The 34-year-old was flown to the University Hospital of St. Etienne for further treatment. Participation in this year's Tour de France is excluded.

Dave Brailsford:
“Our focus now is on giving Chris the best possible care so that he gets well again as quickly as possible. One of our greatest strengths is standing together in difficult moments. We will do our best to support Chris and his family.”

Team INEOS can confirm that Chris Froome will miss the Tour de France after sustaining multiple serious injuries during a recon of today's Criterium du Dauphine stage.
