Giro d'Italia: Giro d'Italia: Elia Viviani & Caleb Ewan start the journey home

22 May 2019 by Michael Behringer

Tour de France Viviani Ewan

Cycling: Although the Giro d'Italia is only halfway through, the first riders will start their journey home today without being injured. Elia Viviani (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto - Soudal) give up the Tour of Italy.

Elia Viviani & Caleb Ewan: Resting for the Tour de France

The statements came as no surprise. Quit while still on their bikes Elia Viviani (Deceuninck – Quick Step) and Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) started their task at the Giro d'Italia after today's eleventh stage. Of the ten remaining sections, only the 18th stage suits them. The prospect of this one day victory doesn't seem big enough to torment yourself through the high mountains for days.

Battle for points: Ackermann & Démare will continue to fight

This looks different Arnaud Demare (Groupama – GDJ) and Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe) off. The Frenchman and the German are fighting highly motivated for the points jersey. Elia Viviani should go home very disappointed. Surprisingly, the Italian champion didn't win a single stage. Caleb Ewan cheered twice.

Yeah💪 big congrats @CalebEwan with the second win #Turn never easy to win one and for sure not two! Great performance of the whole team supporting you towards these important wins @lottosoudal a true @Captainofcycling #proud
