Giro d'Italia: Giro d'Italia #10: Démare can still do it - Ackermann crashes

21 May 2019 by Michael Behringer

Ackermann Demare Giro d'Italia

Cycling: Arnaud Démare (Groupama – FDJ) has finally won another race. The Frenchman, without a win since August 2018, left the competition behind in the sprint on the tenth stage of the Giro d'Italia. Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe) was not able to intervene. The German champion fell directly under the Rouge flame and sustained some abrasions. Driver Rüdiger Selig (Bora – hansgrohe) sprinted to third place instead.

Ackermann crashes, Démare finally wins

Flat as a plate and only 145,0 kilometers long was today's Giro stage from Ravenna to Modena. Not surprisingly, hardly anyone thought they had a chance as a breakaway today. Nevertheless, he joined in right after the start Luca Covili (Bardiani – CSF) and Shō Hatsuyama (Nippo – Vini Fantini – Faizanè) an Italian-Japanese duo up and away. Due to the sprinter teams, however, the two were caught again well before the finish. Directly below the devil's rag, a fall occurred relatively far in front of the peloton. Among other things, it caught Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe). It tore his point jersey in several places, so that he suffered some skin abrasions. Into the sprint – finally Arnaud Demare (Groupama - FDJ) won - the German champions could not intervene. Immediately after the stage, it was not clear how badly it had hit him and some other colleagues.
