Cycling: As expected, today's Giro d'Italia was a success for the escapees. Fausto Masnada (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) proved to be the strongest professional in a 13-man breakaway and won the section ahead of Valerio Conti (UAE Team Emirates). Due to the achieved lead, the second placed managed to take over the pink jersey from Primoz Roglic (Jumbo – Visma).
Jumbo - Visma lets the breakaways go
The 238,0 kilometer stage from Cassino to San Giovanni Rotondo was characterized by 13 breakaways. About 50 kilometers after the start, the large group was able to form up and quickly gain a lead of several minutes. Was at the forefront too Valerio Conti (UAE Team Emirates). The Italian was only 1:59 minutes behind Leader in the overall standings before the start Primois Roglic (Jumbo - Visma). Although his team controlled the pace in the peloton, they didn't seem to want to defend the pink jersey. So it was clear early on that the escapees would decide the stage win among themselves today. Jumbo – Visma was just trying to Sam Oomen (Sunweb) and Andrew Amador (Movistar) not to grant too large a head start.
Masnada wins the stage & Conti takes over Rosa
When the Coppa Casarinelle started, the Italians could immediately Fausto Masnada (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) and Valerio Conti detach from their companions. Actually, the two could have worked very well together and shared the stage win and the pink jersey amicably. But since Conti could not take part in the management work, Masnada launched several attacks – in vain. After all, the Bergpreis was left to him. On the somewhat easier last few kilometers, Conti was able to contribute a little more to the pace work. In the final sprint for the day's victory, however, he backed down, knowing that he would receive the pink jersey. Therefore, Fausto Masnada can be happy about the stage victory - and Valerio Conti now leads the overall standings with a comfortable margin.
