Giro d'Italia: Giro d'Italia #11: Caleb Ewan uses the last chance for the sprinters

Ewan Caleb Giro d'Italia

Cycling: Caleb Ewan (Lotto – Soudal) clinched his second stage win at this year's Giro d'Italia. The little Australian left Arnaud Démare (Groupama – FDJ) and Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe) behind in a mass sprint.

Three Italians escape

As was the case yesterday, no mountain classification stood in the way of the pros at the Giro d'Italia. On the 221,0 kilometer stage from Carpi to Novi Ligure, three Italians tried their luck as breakaways. Again made themselves Marco Fraporti (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec), Mirco Maestri (Bardiani – CSF) and Damian Cima (Nippo – Vini Fantini – Faizanè) up and away to present their sponsors to the public. Unsurprisingly, this escape attempt was not crowned with success. Although the temperatures were pleasant, they crossed the sprint classifications first, but were caught again by the peloton before reaching the finish line in Novi Ligure. Unfortunately, her compatriot was not able to compete in the eleventh stage Matteo Moschetti (Trek – Segafredo). The young sprinter was taken to hospital after his fall yesterday and didn't start again today.

Ewan seemingly effortlessly sprints to his second win

Already about 25,0 kilometers before the finish, the merger came together. Due to the headwind conditions, there should be no further attempts to escape. As expected, the sprinters were able to take their last chance for a mass sprint. The French Equipe Groupama - FDJ was very present and self-confident within the last few kilometers. But sprinters Arnaud Demare should the double whammy not succeed. As Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe) put his nose into the wind early on, namely snapped Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) whose rear wheel. The little Australian passed and couldn't be overtaken anymore. In his second stage win, he finished ahead of Arnaud Démare, Pascal Ackermann and the still unlucky one Elia Viviani (Deceuninck - Quick Step).

Ackermann loses the jersey of the best points

In the interim evaluation could Arnaud Demare two points up Pascal Ackermann catch up. At the finish he also placed in front of the German champion. Arnaud Démare thus takes the lead in the points classification for the first time this year. Tomorrow the Giro d'Italia will slowly head towards the mountains. For the stage win, the puncheurs come into question. It is widely expected that some sprinters will announce their exit from the Tour of Italy later this evening. However, it seems likely that Ackermann and Démare would like to continue fighting for the Maglia Ciclamino.
