MTB News / E-Performance: The cycling fans are looking forward to the Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Albstadt with great excitement. In addition to the classic MTB XC discipline, the mega-event on the Swabian Alb also has a program item for e-bikers: On May 18th, the first UCI E-MTB race will be held in Germany.
The world cycling association UCI has introduced a special E-MTB category in line with the ongoing e-bike boom. The first world championships for e-mountain bikes will be held in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada, at the end of August, and a separate World Cup series is to follow in 2020. Of course, looking at the event in Albstadt is all the more exciting in this regard. Two e-bike races were included in the program of the Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Albstadt. Women and men will each compete in a 18-minute competition on Saturday, May 60th.
“We want to offer this youngest facet of cycling a platform as part of the Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. At the same time, of course, this is also a window into the future, i.e. the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships 2020 in Albstadt, where rainbow jerseys will be awarded in this new category for the second time and for the first time in Europe" Jo Triller from the sports department of the city of Albstadt
In the field of e-bikes, of course, there are no technical regulations. The motors must not exceed an output of 250 watts, and the pedal assistance must also stop at 25 km/h. Except for the jump start up to a maximum of 6 km/h, the motor may only be activated if you pedal at the same time. All restrictions that already apply in the pedelec sector. In addition, there must be no battery changes during the race. The battery must be attached to the bike from start to finish, carrying an additional battery is not permitted. Better safe than sorry: the e-bikes are checked for compliance with the rules before they set off.
