components: Endurance test: Bikebeat high-flyer Pro – light all-rounder from Germany

18 April 2019 by Florian Nowak

Test: With the Bikebeat high-flyer Pro we had a wheelset from the young German manufacturer for the first time for testing. In more than a thousand kilometers we were able to put the 45 millimeter high carbon speedsters to the test.

With the Bikebeat high-flyer Pro, we tested the further development of the basic model high-flyer. These were inspired by an Airbus aerospace patent, which was specifically adapted to wheel development to further develop the machine braiding of carbon and use it for cycling. This creates unidirectional braids, which should ensure a unique, non-copyable design. This braiding process is intended to prevent air pockets in the carbon and overlaps in the material. This also promotes the distribution of the resin over the fibers and distributes it evenly so that no excess material is used. According to the manufacturer, this also makes the wheels particularly heat-resistant, which should make a huge contribution to safety, especially on descents where you brake a lot for a long time.

At 1.290 grams per wheelset, the result is a very light 45mm clincher wheelset. In addition to the high-tech braiding process, the Pro variant does not use any additional paintwork that could increase the weight, and thus offers a clean look for puristic driving pleasure. In addition to development and design, the Bikebeat high-flyer wheels are also 100% manufactured in Germany to ensure the best quality.

Of course, we wanted to put these technologies to the test and find out what's really behind them. The low weight cannot be denied and is immediately noticeable on the journeys. You almost seem to “fly” uphill, especially when it gets a little steeper. In connection with the great stiffness, the wheels can also score in terms of acceleration, since you can feel a direct power transmission to the road without wasting energy and not arriving where it should. The Bikebeat high-flyers Pro also make a good impression when it comes to aerodynamics. The 45 millimeter high rim offers a good compromise between rolling properties and lightweight construction, so you can be on the move quickly on any terrain. The susceptibility to wind is almost zero here due to the medium-high rim and gives you a safe driving experience. The brake flanks also do a good job and contribute to safety. In dry conditions, the Premperformance does not differ at all from disc brakes and even in the wet you can dose well and come to a safe and precise stop. A particularly important point for us, since some carbon wheels with rim brakes often show major weaknesses and make life difficult for drivers. For us, a super all-round wheelset that knows exactly what it can do and shows it!

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
