Product news: Product news: Specialized S-Works EXOS – Light-footed performance

February 26, 2019 by Florian Nowak

Product news: With the Specialized S-Works EXOS and EXOS 99, the newest line of road bike shoes is coming onto the market after the S-Works 7. The great feature is the groundbreaking weight of the two models.

The new Specialized S-Works EXOS models are all about lightness. It's not just about the weight, but also lightness in terms of agility and strength. The shoes could be designed in such a way that the construction was limited to the essentials.

Specialized S-Works EXOS 99

In order to get the most out of shoe performance and technology, the highest level of engineering was required. The result is a shoe that weighs under 100 grams (for a size 42) without sacrificing performance. Every detail, from the carbon plate with multidirectional fiber orientation to the material and cutting pattern of the laces, has been meticulously scrutinized. The S-Works EXOS 99 is strictly limited to 500 pairs.

Dyneema, a material that is also used in space travel, was used to bring the Specialized S-Works EXOS 99 down to its weight. During development, all rules were disregarded so as not to limit yourself. They redesigned the heel counter, removed the toe box and designed a 50 gram carbon outsole. The carbon structure analysis took almost as long as the development of the Tarmac. Every possible gram has been shed to build the lightest pair of cycling shoes ever.

Special materials were used to guarantee the best rigidity. The inelastic Dyneema upper nestles around the heel and ensures excellent power transmission. Together with the 50 gram outsole, which is in no way inferior to other S-Works models in terms of stiffness, maximum lightness and efficiency can be achieved.

With so much performance, comfort should not be missing. Here they remained true to themselves and focused on the proven, ergonomically developed, scientifically tested body geometry properties. In addition, the Specialized S-Works EXOS have a stiff Dyneema outer skeleton that nestles around the foot. Combined with a malleable toe cap and shoelaces that distribute the pressure evenly over the shoe, this should also ensure comfort.

Specialized S-Works EXOS

In addition to the EXOS 99 with shoelaces, the Specialized S-Works EXOS offers even easier handling and versatility thanks to the proven BOA closure. An absolute must for racing drivers, in order to be able to tighten their shoes again shortly before the finish line.

The Dyneema upper material is also used here and enables the best possible power transmission and fit. Combined with the 66-gram outsole, you get stiffness values that are in no way inferior to other S-Works models. Body geometry fit features ensure comfort. All this is already available for 150 grams per shoe.

Prices: EXOS 99 – 649,90 euros/ EXOS – 499,90 euros
