cycling: Cycling dates: The Tour Down Under starts in January

8 January 2019 by Michael Behringer

Cycling dates January 2019

Cycling dates: The wheels are rolling again! The new year is already in full swing - and the cycling dates promise some highlights in January. With the Tour Down Under, the WorldTour season begins in a week's time on Tuesday. Some events also await their visitors away from the streets. In track cycling, the six-day races are held in Bremen and Berlin. In cyclocross, the pros prepare for the World Championships in early February with World Cup races.

Ocher is trumps: The Tour Down Under with Sagan, Porte & Viviani

Traditionally, the races in warmer climes herald the start of the new cycling season. On January 13th, the pros will take to the streets for the first time in Australia at the Down Under Classic. The first WorldTour race begins just two days later. The Tour Down Under extends over six stages and leads up Old Willunga Hill again this year. But in 2019 the decision will actually only be made on the last day. In addition to four flat stages, the hilly fourth stage and the final mountain finish on January 20 should ensure time gaps. According to the current registration lists, in addition to three-time world champion Peter Sagan (Bora - hansgrohe), local hero Richie Porte (Trek - Segafredo) and sprint star Elia Viviani (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) will also be at the start. Numerous German professionals also want to give their form a final touch. So we expect Nico Denz (AG2R La Mondiale), Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain – Merida) and Max Walscheid (Sunweb) among others in the squad.

Cycling dates on the road: All highlights in January 2019

In addition to the Tour Down Under for men and women, there are of course other cycling dates on the program in January. The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is also part of the WorldTour. Meanwhile, the pros absent from Australia keep fit at the Vuelta Ciclista a la Provincia de San Juan in Argentina, La Tropicale Amissa Bongo Ondimba in Gabon or the Tour d'Indonesia.
