Product news: When it comes to bicycle components, there is no getting around one brand: Shimano. The industry giant from Japan is installed on bicycles more often than any other manufacturer. Shimano offers suitable products for every category. It doesn't matter whether it's a cheap city bike or high-end sports equipment.
Parts such as gear levers, cranks or rear derailleurs usually last for a while. However, there are also components that have to be declared as wear parts from the outset and that will eventually need to be replaced. Where Shimano is installed, there should also be a Shimano original part - and there are good reasons for that:
- An original part ensures that the usual and desired function is retained.
- Shimano always wants to keep its customers up to date with the latest technology: Shimano parts are constantly being optimized in the course of series production.
- Shimano promises the highest quality standards for maximum fitting accuracy, reliability and safety.
- Original parts are optimally matched to each other, which should optimize durability.
Parts have to be exchanged, and not everything is equally suitable. A 10-speed chain is not just a 10-speed chain. SLX not XT or XTR, and Dura Ace not Ultegra.
Regular technical checks are mandatory. If you are not sure: off to the workshop of trust.
A regular check of brake pads ensures that there are no nasty surprises. Pad and disc, as well as the braking system itself, must fit together. If you use cheap accessory products, there is a risk of overheating and noise development, in the worst case the failure of the braking system. The guarantee expires. A regular visual inspection of brake pads and brake discs makes sense. The brake disc has a thickness of 1,8mm when delivered, and must be replaced if it is 1,5mm or more.
Cassette and chain also want to fit together. If the lateral flexibility of the chain does not match the rest of the shifting components, the shifting quality can suffer enormously. In terms of shape and surface quality, including surface hardness, the individual components of a groupset are precisely matched to one another. You should therefore refrain from simply using the number of gears or the gradation as a decision criterion. Ideally, always install "in groups", then it works.
The chain can be checked quickly and easily using a measuring gauge. The chain and cassette should be kept clean and lubricated only as much as necessary. Oil is only needed in the "inside" of the chain, on the surface it only attracts dust and dirt. Incidentally, the shift housing and shift cables should also be replaced occasionally, at the latest when the manual forces increase noticeably when shifting.
As part of our 2018 advent calendar, we are giving away five Shimano wear sets for your bike. I wish you success!
Please note: The wear sets consist of chain and cassette and brake pads. Only owners of bicycles with originally installed Shimano components can take part. The bike must not be more than 5 years old. We require proof of purchase of the bike. There is one set of consumables per winner.
The legal process is excluded.
Employees of the Degen Mediahouse and their relatives are excluded from participation.
The prizes that are raffled off in the Velomotion advent calendar were provided free of charge by the respective companies - we would like to thank the companies whose logos you can see on the overview page for their support.
The participation period ends at midnight on the respective calendar day.
Winners will be notified by email (to the address entered) after the draw (from December 25th).
Your e-mail address will only be saved for the duration of the raffle. All data collected will be deleted after the winners have been drawn. The winners will be notified by email and have 14 days to respond to the message and provide a shipping address.
