Spectrum: Radon home visit – Visiting the Rhenish bicycle giant

7 November 2018 by Michael Faiss

Market: Radon should probably be known to most cyclists in this country - it was initially the outstanding price/performance ratio with which the direct seller from the Rhineland made the headlines, but with progressive in-house developments they are now one of the big players in the two-wheeler business in this country. We visited the 'holy halls' and the megastore.

All the threads for Radon and Bike Discount come together in an inconspicuous building in the industrial area of Grafschaft, a small community about 30 minutes south of Bonn. Wait a minute – bike discount? That's right, Radon started several years ago as the sender's own brand. Due to the success far beyond the borders of Germany, however, one emancipated oneself from the "discounter image". To this day, however, Radon and Bike Discount are inseparable.

Dominic welcomes us and takes us straight on a tour of the 1st floor offices.

But before we get to work...coffee!

The atmosphere on site is relaxed and simply down-to-earth overall. Anyone expecting a glass palace with an indoor swimming pool, café bars full of detox drinks and lounges instead of meeting rooms is in the wrong place here: The furnishings are refreshingly pragmatic and suit the mood - hearty laughter mixes with eager keyboard typing and various telephone ring tones.

The team jerseys for next season are being worked on in the design offices.
#see you soon in the forest? Would we sign like this...

Little things here and there show that there are real bicycle lunatics in these rooms - the improvised frame lighting is just one of many examples.

The in-house photo studio was also exciting for me as a photographer. If you used to assign this externally, you now want to have sovereignty over the photos, for example for the website. Nice detail: the entire flash system comes from Multiblitz, a company from the region that you want to support.

Just a few steps further behind an inconspicuous door is the in-house photo studio, where the pictures for the new 2019 bikes are being taken.
Of course: If you have as many different bikes on offer as Radon, you need the right pedal for every photo...

Radon Bikes 2019: First impressions from the press camp

Doubly hidden: In the stairwell we discover a 'Erlkönig' of bygone days. slide prototype?
Not far away is a jersey signed by Raphaela Richter – Radon team rider, German enduro and downhill champion.

As you can see: work is being done here!
If something doesn't move enough... assembly grease.
And if it moves too much: cable ties.
Disc Graveyard. One bent, the other slowed down: You shouldn't take any risks here.

It's better with music... the PA system for events fills the workshop with sound on a daily basis.
… we leave the workshop and go one floor down. Here everything revolves around assembly, packaging and shipping. This is also where test bikes from events or magazines end up (pictured).
The bikes ordered in the online shop are prepared for shipping on the assembly stands.
... at the end of the chain they end up in their boxes and make their way to the lucky buyers.

One or the other bike is waiting for its buyer in the warehouse. Incidentally, not only Radon bikes are stored here, but also numerous Cube or Mondraker bikes, for example, which can also be bought in the shop.

Bike Discount Megastore – Mega means MEGA!

A few minutes drive away is the Bike Discount Megastore. Opened in 2013, you will find hundreds of complete bikes here on more than 5.000m², not only from Radon, but also from Cube, for example. If you are not looking for a new bike but are looking for components, accessories or clothing for the next ride, you will also find what you are looking for here. So much choice in one store - impressive!

Radon Megastore
So that's what it looks like when thousands of bicycles are exhibited on a sales area of more than 5.000m² and are waiting for their buyers. In the case of the megastore, mega really means MEGA.

However, there are not only bicycles here, but also everything else that a cyclist could need... Would you like a helmet?
... the selection of shoes is no less large. It doesn't matter whether it's flat pedal shoes for the gravity faction or super light shoes for roadies.
Of course, bikes take up most of the space in the Bike Discount Megastore Radon – the countless bikes are sorted by topic in separate themed worlds.
Online shopping is all well and good - but being able to touch your new bike before you buy it is always a nice thing.
It is therefore not surprising that the selection on site also attracts numerous customers who might otherwise only have ordered online.

The topic of e-bikes is of course just as present here as it is in the entire industry.
Even if a lot of things revolve around the own brand Radon, other manufacturers are not excluded in the megastore: Cube, for example, has its own area.
There is also a full-fledged test track in the basement of the huge bicycle shop so that the bikes can be properly tested on site.

The Gravity Pro Shop is a shop within a shop especially for the downhill crowd.
Here you can find everything that makes gravity hearts beat faster - from soft goods to protectors and equipment.
