Product news: Canyon Grail AL: Koblenz gravel bike now also as an aluminum version

2 November 2018 by Florian Nowak

Product news: Just eight months after the launch of the Canyon Grail, the Koblenz-based gravel bike, the Canyon Grail AL is a new version of the model series, which – as the name suggests – is particularly characterized by the aluminum frame.

Canyon Grail AL - The Frame

The Canyon Grail AL shows its best side with its Gravel frame set at around 1.900g, especially in the entry-level class. The frame is very similar to its big brother made of carbon, especially the tubes with visible edges and a wide connection from the seat tube to the top tube take up the shapes of the carbon frame again. How close the two models are can also be seen from the fact that the same carbon fork is used in both versions.

The new Grail AL is available in a brushed finish and two anodized looking shades to choose from. Compared to the carbon model, the Grail AL frames offer more threaded eyelets for attaching holders, bags, mudguards and luggage racks. This turns the gravel bike into a bikepacking specialist in just a few moments.

Canyon Grail AL

The geometry of the Canyon Grail AL is also extremely interesting, as it covers a wide range for (almost) every rider with six frame sizes and the special women's models. In addition, a relatively long top tube in combination with a short stem should ensure direct steering and a long wheelbase and long chainstays suggest smooth running and directional stability. The chain stays on the aluminum model with the 700c wheels are even 5 mm longer than on the carbon fiber counterpart.

Canyon Grail AL – The equipment

Canyon Grail AL

The Canyon Grail AL unisex models are available with Shimano Tiagra, Shimano 105 or Sram Rival 1×11. The WMN models for female gravel enthusiasts are equipped with Shimano Tiagra or Shimano 105. All bikes have the same 40mm Schwalbe G-One Bite TLE tires that were used on the CF models. New thoughts were also put into the handlebars specifically for the Grail AL and a special aluminum gravel handlebar was developed that offers a moderate inclination angle and widths of up to 460 mm for additional control and safety. The striking and controversial hoverbar of the carbon model is not used on the Grail AL.
