Product news: Shimano presents one of the lightest and cheapest e-bike drive systems. In addition to the two E-MTB systems E8000 and E7000 and the city trekking system E6100, the new Shimano Steps E5000 city comfort system will be launched on the market in the future, which was specially developed for cruising through the big city thanks to its simple and comfortable character - Jungle ease.
The new Shimano Steps E5000 drive unit (DU-E5000) is not primarily made to impress with breathtaking acceleration values or off-road capabilities. Rather, it was specifically developed for use in entry-level and top-of-the-range pedelecs. With its low weight, the high degree of comfort and its special drive characteristics, it should be a welcome support for all those who are on their way through the city.
The Shimano Steps E5000 has 40 Nm of torque and weighs 2,5 kilograms
The Shimano Steps E5000 drive unit generates a pleasant 40 Newton meters of torque. The engine should be pleasantly quiet. The highly efficient motor technology enables a compact and light drive unit, which at 2,5 kilograms is a full 380 grams below the previous Shimano Steps drives. In combination with a choice of derailleur or Nexus geared hub systems, lightweight and agile, comfortable and easy-to-steer bikes can be built that, thanks to robust components such as the square bottom bracket, are made to withstand the rigors of urban cycling.
The Shimano E-Tube Ride App will be available in the app stores from autumn 2019
The Shimano DU-E5000 drive unit should not only be one of the quietest on the market, it should also be one of the lightest and smallest. In combination with integrated batteries, pedelecs can be developed that are difficult to identify as such, even at second glance. A feature that will undoubtedly help spread e-bikes even further in the market. The support power of the drive unit is available in three modes: "Eco", "Normal" and "High". As with all Shimano Steps systems, the driver receives the desired support without delay exactly when he increases the pressure on the pedal. The drive torque is reduced again just as quickly when the driver relieves the pressure. This simulates the driving behavior on conventional bikes and also helps to increase the battery range because the support is only provided when the driver actually calls for it. Central riding or system data such as speed, support mode or battery charge status can be displayed either on a Shimano standard display (e.g. SC-E7000 or SCE6100), a compatible third-party cycle computer or a smartphone in connection with the EW-EN100 connection unit and the E-Tube Show Ride App.
For a truly minimalist and theft-proof setup, additional devices can even be dispensed with entirely - the EW-EN110 connection unit is able to display the most important status information independently via an LED signal. Shimano Steps E5000 naturally works ideally with Shimano's electronic Di2 derailleurs, but is also compatible with mechanical derailleurs. Either Nexus Inter-7 and Inter-8 hubs, the brand-new, special Nexus Inter 5E e-bike hub or the Alfine 8- and 11-speed hubs are used. With all 8-speed Di2 hub gears as well as with the Nexus Inter 5E in the Di2 version, additional functions and features such as the intelligent fully automatic gearshift or the start mode can be accessed through the integration of the drive and shifting system. Batteries with 504 or 418 watt hours are available for the energy supply, which are available in mounting versions for luggage racks, down tubes or for internal mounting.
The Shimano Steps E5000 system is expected to be available on the market from the end of November.
