cycling: Vuelta a Espana #12: Geniez with stage win – Herrada takes over red

September 6, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Herrada Geniez Vuelta a Espana

Cycling: change of leadership at the Vuelta a Espana! Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) has taken over the red jersey from Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) on the 12th stage of the Tour of Spain. The Spaniard now leads the overall standings by more than three minutes. Also part of the breakaway group was Alexandre Geniez (AG2R), who can be happy about the stage win.

Herrada takes over red - Mitchelton-Scott plays with fire

Anyone who expected a mass sprint at the Vuelta a Espana today was taught a lesson. On the 12th stage over 177,5 kilometers from Mondoñedo to Faro de Estaca de Bares the escapees struck again. Two professionals were allowed to cheer particularly loudly at the end of the day. Alexandre Geniez (AG2R) won the stage while Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) was allowed to exchange his red team jersey for the red jersey of the Tour of Spain. Both were members of a leading group of 18, which split into two before the finish. Herrada's lead could have been much bigger if the Spaniard hadn't missed the postal exit with around 20 kilometers to go. He now leads the overall standings by 3:22 from Simon Yates, whose Mitchelton-Scott team was ultimately helped in the tracking work by Movistar – Herrada's former team. After all, they know that Herrada is not to be underestimated in the mountains and in the time trial.
