cycling: European Track Cycling Championships Day #5: 2x silver & 1x bronze for Germany

August 6, 2018 by Michael Behringer

European Track Cycling Championships Reinhardt Kluge Madison

Track cycling: The fans at the Track Cycling European Championships in Glasgow today saw four decisions. The Germans were once again able to celebrate medals. Although there was no gold medal today, there were two silver and one bronze to celebrate.

Kluge & Reinhardt in Madison just behind Belgium

The reigning world champions Theo Reinhardt and Roger Kluge had to settle for the silver medal at the European Track Cycling Championships in Glasgow today. In view of the strong competition, however, the two can be extremely satisfied with the result. For almost the entire race they fought a duel for gold with the Belgian duo Kenny De Ketele and Robbe Ghys. Together they even won a lap because they shadowed each other over the entire race distance. In the sprints, however, the Belgians were usually ahead, which was not least due to Kenny De Ketele's experience and composure. In the end, Belgium triumphed ahead of Germany and Great Britain. The winners of the bronze medal presented themselves very happy at the award ceremony, because the Brits were only able to intercept Spain shortly before the end. The Austrians Andreas Müller and Andreas Graf were also on course for bronze for a short time, but ultimately ended up in eighth place.

Welte takes bronze, Bötticher silver

Last year secured himself Miriam Welte gold medal in the 500 m time trial at the World Championships and the European Championships. This time, however, two women should be faster than the Kaiserslautern. While the Ukrainian Olena Starikova was only able to undercut Miriam Welte's best time by a measly seven thousandths, the Russian Daria Shmeleva left no doubt that she is currently number one in this discipline. A similar dominance was demonstrated in the men's sprint by Dutchman Jeffrey Hoogland. In the final he left Stefan Boetticher no chance. The German previously prevailed against Jack Carlin in a spectacular semi-final. The Brit was relegated in the first run, the German fell in the second. The European Track Cycling Championships in Glasgow will end tomorrow. Men's Elimination and Keirin will award medals, while Women's Keirin and Madison will compete for medals.
