E-bike tour and everyday life: Test: Klever X-Speed 570Wh – S-Pedelec with plenty of power

August 21, 2018 by the editorial office

Clever X Speed

Test: The Klever X-Speed with its futuristic frame design really catches the eye. Equipped with Shimano XT 11-speed, Magura MT4 brakes and other futures, such as the Bluetooth-enabled LCD display with smartphone connectivity, the Klever X-Speed was tested around 1000 km by our Velomotion test commuter Stefan.

Once again I had the pleasure of using an S-Pedelec as a replacement for my car. This time the Klever X-Speed was made available to me to convince myself of its qualities. Not an easy task when you consider that I got off the HNF-Nicolai XD2 Urban, which I also did almost 1000 km on and was more than satisfied with.

The first thing I thought when I saw the Klever X-Speed was: – What kind of frame is that?! The look of the frame is extraordinary and stands out from other manufacturers. Whether you like it or not is a matter of taste. In any case, I really like the extravagant frame. Only the battery could have been packaged a little nicer for my taste. This affects the actual futuristic look of the Klever X-Speed. However, all cables and trains were routed internally. And the mudguards and bag holders also fit very well into the overall picture. The fact that a horn is mounted instead of a bell surprised me at first. But it makes sense in traffic and the high speeds that are possible with an S-Pedelec (in our case a real 48 km/h).

Thanks to the Magura MT4 brakes combined with the Schwalbe Super Moto tires, there is always more than enough braking power and grip even at these high speeds. And the 11-speed XT rear derailleur with Shadow Plus technology leaves nothing to be desired anyway and has the right gear ready at any speed.

Other special features of the Klever X-Speed are the electronic anti-theft alarm system including blocking of the rear motor and the Bluetooth-enabled LCD display with smartphone connectivity.

Klever X-Speed – driving impression

The Klever Biactron hub drive does its job very quietly and cannot be heard while driving. The power of this motor surprised me, as it is a huge step up in comparison to the Bosch Performance Line Speed drive. The Klever Biactron hub drive achieves 49 Nm and 600 W nominal power. However, this also comes at the expense of range. Despite 570Wh in the tank, only about 30 kilometers were possible at the highest level. At a lower level, depending on driving style, up to 60 km are possible. The Klever X-Speed weighs 26,9 kg, and thanks to a pushing aid, it can be easily pushed up steep inclines. The maximum system weight is 158 kg.

Now to the negative sides of the Klever X-Speed, the front suspension fork is unfortunately a bit overwhelmed with the speed and the high total weight. The rebound could not be adjusted on our test bike either. Here we might have wished for a product from a well-known manufacturer.

When driving on cobblestones or similar, a constant clattering of mudguard and chain could be heard. I would have expected more from such a high-quality bike.

The display is very easy to remove from its holder. Which isn't actually bad, but it comes off with just a little touch, e.g. B. when re-parking in narrow basements, from the holder. In addition, there was an unintentional encounter with a cat during my test drives. Thanks to the Magura MT4, the cat survived, but the rain-soaked road did the rest to catapult me out of the saddle. During the fall, the display also came loose from the holder. Only after what felt like an eternity was I able to find the display three meters further in the meadow next to the road. Unfortunately, it would not have been possible to continue driving with support without a display. It would be nice if the display had a kind of lock so that it cannot accidentally come loose from the holder.

Another shortcoming is that the battery cannot be charged immediately after an intensive ride. Because when the battery is "warm" it needs quite a bit of time to cool down. The battery can only be charged after a cooling time of approx. 30 minutes. In my case it didn't matter because I had several hours until the next onward journey. However, if you have only planned a short stopover on your tour, it is annoying that the first half hour cannot be used to charge the battery. The charging time is about 3,5 hours.

However, if you overlook these blemishes, you get an S-Pedelec for €4899 that is really fun. Starting with the great optics to the extremely powerful drive and the usual very well-functioning XT groupset. Anyone who likes a little extravagance will do everything right with the Klever X-Speed. However, when it came to performance, the focus was on speed and not on touring suitability. But in my case it was exactly my taste.
