cycling: Tour of Poland #3: Hodeg drives with a long sprint to win the stage & into the yellow

August 6, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Hodeg Alvaro Tour of Poland

Cycling: Today it worked for Alvaro Hodeg (Quick-Step Floors). The Colombian can look forward to winning the third stage of the Tour of Poland after two second places. After an exemplary preparatory work by Michael Morkov (Quick-Step Floors), the new wearer of the yellow jersey successfully pulled off a long sprint. German André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) finished third behind Daniel McLay (EF Education).

Bora-hansgrohe has to work a lot

Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) was allowed to drive through Poland in the yellow jersey after his two stage wins. 140 kilometers had to be covered from the Slaski Stadium to Zabrze, with a short circuit being driven at the end. The four-man lead group got there first. Jenthe Biermans (Katusha-Alpecin) was able to extend his lead in the most active rider ranking, as was his companion Michael Paluta (CCC Sprandi-Polkowice) consolidated its leading position in the mountain classification. Together with Mathias Le Tournament (Cofidis) and Alexander Foliforov (Gazprom-RusVelo) shaped the race, but they didn't have a realistic chance of getting through. The German team Bora-hansgrohe - above all Cesare Benedetti - forced the expected mass sprint through a lot of work in the peloton.

Alvaro Hodeg gets the sprint perfectly prepared

Unlike on the first stage and the second stage shouldn't today Pascal Ackermann have the edge. On the right side of the road, the German champion in the yellow jersey couldn't get into the right position. While he was partially trapped, the Danish champion fired on the left side of the lane Michael Morkov (Quick-Step Floors) over. He pulled his sprint captain on his rear wheel Alvaro Hodeg (Quick-Step Floors) with it. Although he started the sprint relatively early, he was able to afford it because of the gap that opened up behind him. To his left secured himself Daniel McLay (EF Education). André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) took second place. Only twelfth place was left for Pascal Ackermann today. Due to the time bonuses, he also has to hand over the yellow jersey to Alvaro Hodeg.
