cycling: Track Championship 2018 Day #5: Welte wins in the sprint, Levy in the keirin

July 15, 2018 by Michael Behringer

German track cycling championship

Track cycling: The German track cycling championship 2018 is over. Four title holders were chosen on the last day in Dudenhofen. Among other things, Maximilian Levy was able to defend his German championship title in keirin. Miriam Welte won the final in the women's sprint - and dedicated this victory to the injured Kristina Vogel.

Ladies: Charlotte Becker & Miriam Welte are triple champions

Charlotte Becker will look back at the German Track Cycling Championships 2018 in Dudenhofen with a good feeling. After her gold medal in the points race and in the team pursuit, the Berliner also secured precious metal today. In the scratch, the 35-year-old left Tanja Erath and Anna Knauer behind. This means that she can call herself the reigning three-time German champion.

She also secured her third gold medal at the German Track Cycling Championships 2018 on the final day Miriam Welte. The woman from Kaiserslautern won the women's sprint and is the successor to Kristina Vogel, who had previously been successful in this discipline eight times. Miriam Welte won in two runs against Emma Hinze. Pauline Grabosch secured third place with a 2-0 win over Laura Imperatori.

Miriam Welte
"I dedicate this title to Kristina."

Men: Maximilian Levy defends his title in the keirin

There were three titles up for grabs in the men's competitions today. Triumphed at the Madison Richard Banusch and Christian Koch with 48 points in front of Henning Bommel and Moritz Malcharek (38 points), as well as in front of Achim Burkart and Kersten Thiele (36 points). The men's points race won somewhat surprisingly Eric Schubert with 70 points in front of Richard Banusch (55 points) and Moritz Malcharek (47 points).

In the gentlemen's keirin Maximilian Levy lives up to its role as favourite. While silver and bronze went to Robert Förstemann and Stefan Bötticher, the 31-year-old defended his title at the German Track Cycling Championships. Despite his good form, Maximilian Levy will not start at the European Championships in Glasgow.

Maximilian Levy:
“This championship had a completely different focus than previous years. When I started in the team pursuit, I had a different focus. Nevertheless, I was able to win in the team sprint and in the keirin at the launch. It couldn't have gone any better."

Offspring: Lea Sophie Friedrich & Elias Edbauer cream off

In addition to the titles in the elite class, new German champions were also crowned in the junior division. Two prospective professionals in particular excelled at the German Track Cycling Championships in Dudenhofen. Leah Sophie Friedrich secured no fewer than five gold medals. The only 18-year-old won the sprint, keirin, 500-meter time trial and team sprint competitions among the juniors. Alongside Miriam Welte, she was even successful in the team sprint in the elite class. Had a similar number of moments of jubilation Elias Edbauer. In his home country he secured the 1.000 He won gold in the meter time trial, as well as in the sprint and keirin. The future of German track cycling thus appears secure.
