Product news: Product news: Mavic with new Cosmic Ultimate and new Ultimate line

June 17, 2018 by Florian Nowak

Product news: Since 2006, the Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate wheel has been one of the most successful on the WorldTour. This track record should also be continued with the latest wheel and tire system of the Cosmic Ultimate series. Mavic is also bringing a whole range of new clothing items to the Mavic Ultimate Line.

Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate UST

The Mavic Cosmic Carbon Ultimate wheelset has established itself as a true classic over the years. Development has also continued for the new 2019 generation. Now there is a new Road Tubeless UST version of the Cosmic Ultimate and Mavic has taken the opportunity to redesign their flagship wheelset from the ground up. A special highlight are the glued carbon spokes. This technology increases the stiffness and brings the weight down to just 1310g. The rim depth is 40mm and the outer rim width is 26mm, the inner 19mm, with a NACA Aero rim profile. The new design includes 20 low-profile, molded-in carbon spokes front and rear.

With the new glued-on spokes, the rim base also has no spoke holes, so no leaks can occur. The trailing edge is asymmetrical for more balanced spoke tension between the drive side and non-drive side. Also, Mavic has inherited their iTgMAX braking technology from their Cosmic Pro Carbon UST wheels.

Mavic has also improved the hubs of the Cosmic Ultimate UST, with more compact front hub flanges and a carbon rear hub shell. It has implemented its ID360 freewheel for faster, lower engagement and higher torsional rigidity and uses an extra light freewheel body. There are Shimano/SRAM, Campagnolo and XD-R options.

Mavic supplies the Cosmic Ultimate UST wheelset with their own Yksion Pro UST tires in 25mm or 28mm widths. Weighing in at 260g for the 25mm and 290g for the 28mm, Mavic says they can be ridden with just 30g of sealant (in each tire).

Mavic has also updated its brake pads, replacing its older yellow version with new gray ones. The result should be improved wet and dry braking distances - and no more yellow marks on the braking surfaces.

As you might expect, this technology doesn't come cheap, as the Cosmic Ultimate wheels cost €3.500 a set including sealant, brake pads, rims and titanium quick releases.

Alongside its new Cosmic Ultimate UST Carbon Clincher wheelset, Mavic has also introduced a wide range of new clothing and accessories.

Mavic Comete Ultimate Aero Helmet

The Comete Ultimate is Mavic's first aero road helmet. The new design is said to save 14 seconds per hour at 40kmh compared to the Mavic Cosmic Pro helmet. The weight for a medium size is 215 grams. In addition, the ventilation is said to have been optimized for effective temperature control.

In addition to MIPS technology, Mavic also uses a construction method called EPS 4D, which improves shock absorption by approximately 30%. There is also an adaptive belt system. The Mavic Comete Ultimate Aero helmet without MIPS is €250 and the MIPS version is €270, there are five color options across the range.

Mavic Cosmic Ultimate SL Shoe

The new Mavic Cosmic Ultimate SL shoe has already been tried and tested on the WorldTour and is intended to complement the current Mavic Ultimate Line down to the feet. They feature a single Boa closure on the upper, which consists of a synthetic frame laser welded to mesh panels. Mavic has increased the width of its toe box for a more comfortable fit. There's also a new all-carbon sole unit that Mavic says saves 10 grams. This results in a weight of 199g per shoe for size 8,5. The price is €380 and there is also a women's specific version called the Sequence Ultimate SL.

Cosmic Ultimate GTX rain jacket

Another highlight in the Mavic Ultimate line is the Cosmic Ultimate GTX jacket. Gore-Tex Active with Shakedry is used, which is intended to ensure a waterproof jacket in a class of its own. In addition, the Mavic Cosmic Ultimate GTX jacket should only weigh 95 g and of course be super stowable.

Mavic Cosmic Ultimate Insulated SL Vest

With the Mavic Cosmic Ultimate Insulated SL vest, which weighs only 80 grams and has extremely compressible Coreloft 40 insulation, you are well prepared even in changeable conditions. Because the Ultimate vest is DWR treated to be water repellent. There is an outside pocket and the small size makes it easily stowable in its own storage bag. The vest is designed to be worn under a waterproof jacket when conditions turn wet and cold.

In addition to the new jackets, shoes and helmet, there are a number of other new Cosmic Ultimate kits and new colors for this summer in the Mavic Ultimate line.

But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
