cycling: GP Citta di Lugano: Pernsteiner celebrates the best day of his career

June 3, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Pernsteiner Lugano

Cycling: Victory for Austria in Switzerland! At the GP Citta di Lugano, Hermann Pernsteiner benefited from the dominance of his Bahrain-Merida team. No fewer than five men placed in the top eight. At the finish, the winner talked about the best day of his career in an interview.

Pernsteiner benefits and fulfills its task perfectly

What does a team do when they are superior in a race? Either she dominates the peloton for her captain, or she causes unrest in the same with attacks. Halfway through the race, the Bahrain-Merida team probably didn't even know that they would be so superior on the 186-kilometer track in Lugano than they were with Herman Pernsteiner sent a man on the offensive. Along with the Italian Kristian Sbaragli (Israel Cycling Academy) the Austrian was able to pull away successfully. Behind it it became more and more evident that Bahrain-Merida seems to have several winners in their own ranks today. The lead grew quickly and it was possible to get through successfully. In the penultimate climb, Herrmann Pernsteiner then launched his attack to emerge victorious from the duo at the end of the day. Kristian Sbaragli had nothing more to oppose him. He lost 32 seconds but saved second place across the finish line. Rounding out the near-perfect result for Bahrain-Merida was Enrico Gasparotto, Giovanni Visconti, Domenico Pozzovivo and Antonio Nibali, finishing 3rd, 5th, 6th and 8th.

Herman Pernsteiner:
"This is the best day of my career. I just can't believe it."

In Austria the knot has burst

After the Austrians had to wait a long time for their first win this year, the past few weeks have seen one triumph after another. For the first time in 2018 Austria was able to thank Stephen Rabitsch (Felbermayr-Simplon catfish) cheer. He won the third stage of the Rhône-Alpes Isère Tour and then even the general classification. Just two weeks later, he added to his country's tally of victories by also winning a stage and the overall at the Paris-Arras Tour. After that, Stephan Rabitsch let a compatriot and teammate run. Luke Schlemmer won the second leg of the Tour of Poland Szlakiem walk majora Hubala. Won at the Romanian Tour of Bihor Jodok Salzman (WSA Pushbikers) the short individual time trial before June 3rd Herman Pernsteiner was able to increase the yield of the Austrians again with the greatest success of his career. There are now a few victories in 2018, but the Austrians are still waiting for their first WorldTour victory this season.
