cycling: Critérium du Dauphiné #P: Kwiatkowski races into the yellow jersey

June 3, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Kwiatkowski Dauphine

Cycling: Michal Kwiatkowski is the first wearer of the yellow jersey at the 2018 Critérium du Dauphiné. The Pole won the prologue at the start of the stage race with a one-second lead over Jos Van Emden (LottoNL-Jumbo).

Good luck & bad luck for Sky

The Critérium du Dauphiné started this afternoon with a 6,6-kilometer prologue. In the city of Valence, a flat and very fast course had to be completed, which should favor the absolute specialists in the fight against the clock. This was to be expected even before the start - and was then finally confirmed by the result. With a time of 7:25 Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky) at the end of the day the fastest pro. The Pole can not only be happy about the stage win, but also about the yellow jersey of the overall leader. He let Jos Van Emden (LottoNL-Jumbo) by a second or Gianni Moscon (Sky) behind by three seconds.

They also presented themselves strongly Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha-Alpecin) and Marc Soler (Movistar), who are just 18 and 20 seconds behind. The Austrian Matthias Brandle (Trek-Segafredo) finished a good sixth place. On the other hand, I had bad luck Geraint Thomas (Sky). The team's British captain fell in a right-hand corner and lost 21 seconds to the day's winner. Tomorrow it's going to be quite wavy with seven mountain classifications. But the best climbers and class riders will probably not put their cards on the table just yet. On the contrary: A sprint by a larger group can be expected.
