Cycling: The German team Bora-hansgrohe can celebrate again. Irishman Sam Bennett won his second stage of this year's Tour of Italy at Imola. In the exciting finish on the motorsport racetrack, he was the driver with the most reserves of energy. In heavy rain, Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) lost the connection.
Pouring rain on the way to Imola
The twelfth stage of the Giro d'Italia led the peloton today over 214 kilometers from Osimo to Imola. The finale was held there on the famous Formula 1 race track. However, the breakaway of the day did not reach the highlight of the stage ahead of the peloton. Mirco Maestri and Manuel Seni from Team Bardiani-CSF were asked just as early as Jacopo Fly and Eugert Zhupa by the team Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia and Marco Fraporti by Androni Giocattoli. A lead of over four minutes for the wildcard teams at times shouldn't be enough in the pouring rain, as the teams Quick-Step Floors, Bora-hansgrohe and EF Education in particular were interested in a sprint finish. With 30 kilometers to go, the difficult weather conditions split the peloton. Among other things, there were Richard Carapaz (movistar), Elia Viviani (Quick Step Floors), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Dominic Pozzo alive (Bahrain Merida) in the back.
Sam Bennett wins exciting finish
Shortly before reaching the race track, a few pros who had been left behind were able to reconnect with the peloton, but not Elijah Viviani. Nachdem Tim Wellens (Lotto Fix All) briefly took the lead in the race, there were further breakaway attempts on the last climb, Tre Monti. As a result, they were able to do this until just before the finish line Carlos Betancur (Movistar) and Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Merida) hold their own at the top, but the games between the two started on the home stretch. So was out of the field Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) the laughing third party. Without anyone sticking to his rear wheel, the Irishman sprinted to his second victory at this year's Giro d'Italia.
