Cycling: Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) has won the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico 2018. At the short but very steep mountain top, the Slovenian was the most willing to take risks and ultimately also the strongest rider. They were followed by Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) and Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal) ahead of Geraint Thomas (Team Sky), who took the overall lead.
Tough day for the pros at Tirreno Adriatico. In the end, Primoz Roglic celebrated his first win of the season. The Slovenian caught the right moment for his attack in the tight hairpin bends up to the stage finish in Trevi and tore the decisive gap. Especially Adam Yates threw everything into the balance to catch the LottoNL pro before the finish line, but had to admit defeat by a few seconds. Tiesj Benoot and Geraint Thomas were also able to save themselves from the first larger group, which also included Chris Froome.
“I've lost quite a few sprints in my career and I knew I shouldn't wait until the end because of that. I put everything on one card early on and it was enough. Originally, of course, I wanted to compete for the general classification, but we had already lost a few seconds in the team time trial and after the crash yesterday [...] I knew that the general classification was lost for me. That's why we tried to focus on new goals," said the stage winner shortly after crossing the finish line.
