cycling: Paris-Nice #4: Wout Poels fastest in time trial - Sanchez defends yellow

March 7, 2018 by Michael Faiss

Cycling: Wout Poels (Team Sky) won the time trial at Paris-Nice. The Dutchman didn't give the competition a chance on the almost 20 km long, bumpy course and was eleven seconds faster than second-placed Marc Soler (Movistar). Julian Alaphilippe was third, 16 seconds back. Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) was able to defend his overall lead, but the lead melted away.

It will be exciting before the difficult days at Paris-Nice! After his strong performance yesterday, Luis Leon Sanchez will also be the overall leader in the hot phase of the race tomorrow. With a time of 0:26:01, the Spaniard was able to defend his yellow jersey in the time trial today, even if today's winner Wout Poels is dangerously close to him. Just 15 seconds separate the Dutchman from Sanchez. It's still tight behind them, too, with Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors) and Marc Soler (Movistar) all within striking distance, less than 30 seconds behind.

Felix Großschartner offered another excellent performance. The Austrian, employed by BORA-hansgrohe, lost only 20 seconds to Poels and finished fourth in an impressive manner. In the overall classification, he is only 35 seconds behind in a very good sixth place, even if the mountains over the next few days will demand everything from the young BORA professional.
