cycling: Track World Championships Day #2: Levy with Keirin bronze, Vogel-Grabosch in the sprint HF

March 1, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Levy Keirin Track Cycling World Championships

Track cycling: The BDR also won a medal on the second day of the Track Cycling World Championships. Maximilian Levy secured bronze in the keirin. In the men's and women's team pursuit, however, the Germans went away empty-handed. We can look forward to at least silver tomorrow, because Kristina Vogel and Pauline Sophie Grabosch will meet in the sprint semifinals.

Maximilian Levy narrowly misses second World Cup gold

The Germans almost won a gold medal on the second day of the Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn. European Champion Maximilian Levy already had victory in mind when two riders were able to rush past him in the final meters. Ultimately, the Colombian Fabian Puertas was able to celebrate the world championship title. Japan's Tomoyuki Kawabata won silver. Joachim Eilers was #12.

The men's scratch final was also held tonight. Here the Belarusian Yauheni Karaliok triumphed in front of the Italian Michele Scartezzini and the Australian Callum Scotson. The German-speaking professionals couldn't have a serious say about the medal ranks. Austria's Andreas Muller was #9, German Maximilian Beyer was #10 and Swiss Tristan Marguet was #15.

The Germans also got nothing in the team pursuit, although both the women and the men were able to set new national records. In the women's event, the Americans secured gold ahead of Great Britain, Italy and Canada. Unfortunately, Gudrun Stock, Charlotte Becker, Franziska Brausse and Lisa Brennauer did not make it into the top teams with the sixth best time. The German gentlemen Nils Schomber, Felix Gross, Theo Reinhardt and Kersten Thiele qualified for the small final, but were defeated by the Italians there. Great Britain secured gold ahead of Denmark.

Kristina Vogel meets Pauline Grabosch in tomorrow's sprint semi-final

We already know for sure that tomorrow there will be a better yield of medals for the BDR than today. However, this is not necessarily a reason for celebration, because we would have liked to see the purely German duel in the final. Now Pauline Grabosch and Kristina Vogel meet in the semi-finals. While Kristina Vogel defeated the local hero Laurine Van Riessen quite clearly, Pauline Grabosch also trembled against a Dutchwoman. In both heats she was just ahead of Shanne Braspennincx. Miriam Welte had previously failed precisely because of this opponent. So tomorrow in Apeldoorn there will be a showdown of the two currently best German sprinters. The first run is scheduled for 19:22 p.m., the second run at 19:48 p.m. and the third run at 20:04 p.m. The final will then be held from 20:23. In addition, the men's points race over 40 kilometers is on the program tomorrow, as well as the individual pursuit over four kilometers and the 20-kilometer points race in the women's omnium.
