cycling: Broken collarbones in Simon Geschke and Wout Poels

March 9, 2018 by Michael Faiss

News in brief: There are two broken collarbones to report from the peloton today. On the one hand, it was Simon Geschke who fell at the end of today's stage near Tirreno-Adriatico together with some other riders and crashed into the barrier. Luckily for Wout Poels, who fell on a fast descent near Paris-Nice and hit the asphalt hard. In view of the bad fall, the Dutchman got off lightly with a broken collarbone.

Simon Geschke: "When a driver fell in front of me, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and couldn't avoid it at the high speed." An operation in his home town of Freiburg is scheduled for the next few days. Geschke will probably be out for 4-5 weeks.

The fall of Wout Poels caused a moment of shock in the hot phase of today's stage near Paris-Nice. The Dutchman, who had fallen at over 70 km/h, lay on the road for agonizingly long seconds until he moved and stood unsteadily on his own two feet again. In the evening, the team confirmed that the collarbone was broken. In addition, Poels suffered several deep cuts and a severe bruise in the chest area in the fall. It's anyone's guess when he'll be back in racing – it's probably looking bad for the Giro.
