cycling: Tour of Colombia #3: Gaviria completes the hat trick

February 9, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Gaviria Colombia

Cycling: 3, 2, 1, mine! Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) also won the third stage of the Tour of Colombia. The Colombian won after the first stage and the second stage also the third section of the Colombia Oro y Paz.

Gaviria is unbeatable in the sprint

While the sprint elite compete in exciting mass sprints at the Dubai Tour, drives Fernando Gaviria one victory after another in his native Colombia. The 23-year-old has won all three stages so far. Second was the Italian last night Matteo Malucelli (Androni-Sidermec). Sebastián Molano (Manzana Postobon), who was second on each of the two previous days. Over 163,2 kilometers from Palmira to Buga, the Belgian team Quick-Step Floors once again held everything together and confidently forced the mass sprint.

Colombia Oro y Paz: Now three mountain stages follow

After his third win in a row, Fernando Gaviria now leads the overall standings by 17 seconds over Sebastian Molano and 23 seconds over Matteo Malucelli. But he won't be able to defend the leader's jersey anymore, because today we're going into the mountains. After three flat sections, it now goes three times into the mountains. Other well-known Colombians will fight there. With Nairo Quintana (movistar), Sergio Luis Henao (Sky) and Rigoberto Urán (Team EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale) the starting field sounds almost like a Grand Tour. We can be curious to see which local talent behind these three top stars can draw attention to themselves.
