Product news: The Kalkhoff Endeavor trekking bike is available in 2018 in eight different configurations. The buyers have the choice between derailleur gears, hub gears and pinion gears. There is also a particularly light structure with less than 13kg - with full equipment. Prices start at an affordable €899.
Not the only, but probably the most exciting trekking model series in the Kalkhoff portfolio goes by the name of Endeavor. English for enterprise, endeavor, venture - wheels to tackle. That sounds highly pragmatic and the Endeavor bikes undoubtedly are, but that's only half the story. Because - let's be honest - trekking bikes usually don't exude the greatest sex appeal. Practical for getting from A to B, reliable pack donkeys in everyday life and loyal companions on weekend tours, yes. But rarely more. However, bikes such as the Kalkhoff Endeavor show that this conservative image of trekking bikes, reduced to mean pragmatism, is not set in stone.
Kalkhoff Endeavor – derailleur gears, hub gears or Pinion?
There is hardly any type of bike where the question of the right gears is as important as with a trekking bike. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that every design, whether derailleur gears, hub gears or gears like Pinion, has its strengths and weaknesses, which you can play out individually depending on the area of application. For those who value low weight and low acquisition costs at the same time, there is no way around the classic derailleur gear system. On the other hand, those who place shifting comfort and low maintenance at the top of their list should look at hub gears or even the Pinion gearbox – possibly with a belt drive. All of these combinations are available on the Endeavor.
Kalkhoff Endeavor – The highlights of the model series
Four of the eight Endeavor models stand out in particular. A highlight is certainly the €899 entry-level model Endeavor 27 - for less than €1.000 you can get a full equipment package including Deore gears, LED lighting, disc brakes, suspension fork and of course a luggage rack. The Endeavor 100 is only €8 more expensive: It is shifted with a Nexus 8 hub gear from Shimano, but the undisputed highlight here is the Gates carbon belt, which makes maintenance of the drive almost superfluous.
The Endeavor Lite goes in a completely different direction. As the name suggests, the main focus here is on a low weight without making too many compromises in terms of functionality. It is equipped with a 3×10 XT circuit from Shimano, a light rigid fork and a minimalist luggage rack. So it comes to a very good 12,8kg.
Exclusive, but not unaffordable - the motto of the Endeavor P9 could be something like this. The star of the bike is the Pinion gearbox, which should make the mouths of frequent riders water. In most cases you have to dig really deep into your pocket for a Pinion bike - this is not necessarily only due to the costs for the gearbox itself, but also the construction and development costs for the frames that have to be able to accommodate the gearbox. In this respect, Kalkhoff sets an exclamation mark with an RRP of €1.999 for the cheapest Pinion variant.
All equipment variants of the Kalkhoff Endeavor are also available with a classic diamond or trapezoidal frame.
